Senator calls MTV show a 'travesty'

(CNN) - "Whatever happens, happens."

That's the motto of the cast of the new MTV show "Buckwild," which has drawn the eye of a U.S. senator.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, described "Buckwild" as a "travesty" in a letter to the television network.

"This show plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia," he wrote.

Appalachian party animals bring together booze, brawls and backwoods, filling the void left by "Jersey Shore," the MTV hit that is going off the air after six seasons. On the characters' agenda: "throwing a dump truck pool party" and "building their own human slingshot," the show's website says.

Manchin called for the network to cancel the show, which is set to begin airing in January.

MTV had no comment on the request.

"Let me tell you: our people have given their all for this great country," Manchin wrote of his fellow West Virginians. "They've done the heavy lifting to produce the energy that is needed to produce the steel that builds our factories and cities. The proud veterans of our state have shed more blood and made more sacrifices than most other states to keep America free. We're proud of all we do to make America strong and secure the cherished freedoms that you seem so determined to abuse."

"Jersey Shore" also drew objections from political leaders in the Garden State.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed tax credits for the show approved by a state economic development board in 2011, saying, "As chief executive I am duty-bound to ensure that taxpayers are not footing a $420,000 bill for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the State and its citizens."

Joe,.. you want to go after someone?.. how about starting with Rush Limbaugh. He's been spouting garbage nationwide for years,..and i haven't heard a peep out of know why?.. because a large number of West Virginians worship at his altar.

You have to keep in mind that MTV comes from producers that live on a remote island called Los Angeles.

In an ironic twist, MTV called Manchin's career (as well as the rest of Congress) a travesty.

I think ratings determine whether a show goes or stays Senator. You voiced your opinion so now don't watch it.

I love how all the New Yorkers chime in. What are you going to do when your kingdom of Manhattan gets flooded by global warming? Head to L.A. or go straight on to Israel?

Nobody with any intelligence is going to be watching this program, just like nobody with any intelligence watches "The Hills", "Jersey Shore" or any of the other trash programs on the air.

Sue S., I love how you and others pull the race card yes, once again concerning the elections in West Virginia. This years election results are very simple. Obama is anti-coal and Romney was for coal. That's why Romney got the majority vote in this state period. Joe Manchian separated himself from Obama because of the same reason. Joe has always been pro-coal. Joe kept his job because of this separation. It's political suicide in this state to go against the coal industry.

It sounds like a lousy show...but you are NOT the judge of what is and is not an abuse of freedom of speech! Dislike it all you want and stand up for your state of course but stop pretending you should decide what others can view!

The worst thing you can do Senator is give this show publicity. I had never heard of it but thanks to your complaining I,as well as thousands of others, will now tune in.

@Smeagel4T: Which OC show would you be talking about. Laguna Beach and Coto de Caza are both in Orange County. I lived in Coto de Caza (Real Housewives, for anyone who doesn't know), when that show started and our closest friends lived in Laguna. Both shows were VERY recognizable to me! I did not know any of the Real Housewives personally, but knew plenty exactly like them. The lifestyle in the neighborhood was one of the key reasons we chose to leave.

"Yet if you want to see what Texas really is then watch "King of the Hill" that show has this state down pat!"
================================================================================================ You are absolutely correct! When I watch that show I feel like I'm at a family reunion in East Texas. If they would add a little more racism, a touch more xenophobia, and a large helping of homophobia they'd have it nailed!

The stereotypes about West Virginia were alive and well before this TV show. This will only help solidify things. I would be interested to see the sales numbers for Mountain Dew in West Virginia vs. the rest of the country. See there's one there...

West Virginia is a welfare state, taking more from the Treasury than it pays. New Jersey pays in more than it takes. So W. VA has no basis to protest while Jersey did.

The only "travesty" I see is the one being played on the American taxpayers – obviously these poltiicians spend more time watching cable T.V. then doing their jobs.
