Is a fiscal cliff deal possible – and what happens if it’s not?

(CNN) - With a little over three weeks left before the country could tumble over the fiscal cliff, and with a deal between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner not yet in place, a CNN panel Sunday with Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley hashed out what needs to happen for a deal to be reached, and the possible economic effects of heading over the edge.

Moody's Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi said on “State of the Union” the initial impact of missing the January 1 deadline would likely not be "a big deal," as taxes may not immediately rise, but by February "things start to get uncomfortable." He noted the February deadline for raising the debt ceiling, saying it would be "cataclysmic" not to do so, and would cause a recession.

Republican Corker expresses support for raising tax rates

(CNN) – Another Republican senator said Sunday he'd support raising tax rates on wealthy Americans as part of a deal to avoid the year-end fiscal cliff.

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee said if Republicans agree to raising rates on the top 2% of American earners, they will be better positioned to negotiate for larger spending cuts to Social Security and Medicare, which many Democrats oppose.

GOP lawmakers debate politics of raising top tax rates

(CNN) – Divergent Republican views on raising tax rates for the wealthy were on display Sunday, as time grew shorter for reaching a deal to avoid fiscal crisis at the end of the year.

Reps. Marsha Blackburn and Tom Cole both said on CNN's "State of the Union" they didn't want to see rates increase for top-earning Americans, which President Barack Obama has said must be included in a deal to cut the nation's federal deficit. But the two disagreed on whether it was politically wise for Republicans to steadfastly oppose those tax hikes on the top 2% of American incomes.

Washington (CNN) -– The head of the International Monetary Fund warned that the American economy won’t grow next year without a deal on the fiscal cliff.

Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the IMF, spoke to CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” about the consequences of the president and Congress failing to reach a comprehensive deal on the automatic spending cuts and tax hikes that would occur without an agreement before the end of the year.
