(CNN) - Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who drew heavy criticism from Republicans over her statements after the September attacks on a U.S. diplomatic mission, withdrew her name from consideration for secretary of state on Thursday.
In a letter to President Barack Obama, she said "the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive, and costly - to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities. That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country."

Heartbreaking. Loved her letter though.
Nice to have her at least staying at the UN.
She is a worthy + representative negotiator (usually), and a wonderful diplomat.
Good! Anything Barack Insane Obama says, does or nominates should be cut off. If only McCain was President...
@steve: obama NOT qualified to be waterboy? you mean far too low a task for him, then yes of course. He's a great president. meanwhile, neither Rice nor Kerry are smart enough for the job, nor progressive enough!
Where were Mr. McCain and his friends when Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and others went before Congress and otherwise influenced our nation into going to war for no reason? Where was the outrage then? Those were real crimes and cost our nation nearly a trillion dollors and the blood of our soldiers needlessly. I am so disheartened with our political leaders – from both parties.
Sadly, the crazies win again.
Obama will nominate John Kerry to be Secretary of State, Chuck Hegel to be Secretary of Defense, and will pick Susan Rice to be appointed as National Security Adviser.
Shame on McCain and Graham. The men with vengeance win. These senile men should retire.
@ Dianna
Yes, Huntsman would be good, except he quit the US Ambassador to China position (an Obama appointee).
I seriously doubt if Obama will give him a second go at still another position.
What a shame. Would have been a good successor to Hillary. It's too bad that, once again, politics gets in the way of what's best for the country.
I can see all the nutballs are on right now.
oh, yes, and republicans who don't own that there were more than a few of them against having another African American in a high-profile leadership position.... face it... racism runs this country still!
I sure hope the hateful GOP are very proud of themselves.
The GOP are the big losers here...solidifying their image as obstructionists, hate women, hate blacks....just hoping to free up a seat in Mass for Scott Brown. Best Obama doesn't nominate Kerry.

She was the fall person for the embassy fiasco and deserved to take the fall. She should have had closer examination of her failed role to protect the US Embassies bombed in the 1990's in Africa

It's an embassy, not a military base. It's not supposed to be secure like a fortress. Serving in an embassy in that part of the world is a dangerous job, a job they accepted because they believed in the goals. They didn't do it so that depraved lunatics like you could invoke their names in your political attacks against the President. How dare you use them for that. Just who do you think you are?
Steve,
Stop drinking the cool aid that Fox news feeds you. Wall Street Journal reported two weeks ago (Conservative paper) that the talking points were written by the CIA and other intelligient sources.....this is what Susan Rice was given the night before her Sunday show appearances. Why do you not question General Petraus, remember he was in charge of the CIA at the time. Did you know he did not attend any funerals . Two the men killed were CIA agents.
Get all the facts before you show your ......
McCcain ,Lindsay , Ayote & Co, BIG TIME LOSERS. All Dr. Rice wanted was continue serving her Country.
Move over Robert Bork...you have company.
She may be a thousand times better than that other "Pre-emptive" Rice, none-the-less she is RIce, meant only for cooking.
Her relentless support for that tyrant Bibi and the state of Israel would have probably doomed her any way.
Yea,
Still blaming Bush are we!! she was her own worst enemy, and an enemy of the American People at that she was the chosen scapegoat... Your GoldenBoy is not so Golden, he has divided a once great Nation, that can be great again without him, the Clinton's or the rest of the bleeding heart liberals in power. All I hear from Liberals is Whine, Whine, Whine and Whine some more....gimmeee gimmeee gimmmeee..... sad, truly sad 'people' and I use that term loosly!
She realized they were going to find out something she didn't want out. Act like a punk and get punked, punk.
Bye Susan, don't let the door hit you.
You can blame this on anyone and try to make a point about how great she would have been but yet you say nothing about the knowledge she had and participated in the cover up regargless of who she was trying to protect and that is what you want for secratary of state, someone who willingly passes on lies. RIGHT JUST WHAT WE NEED.
Sounds like a lot of voters are paying attention to the politics of our elected representatives, can't wait for the 2012 election to cast my VOTE.
Howl all you will but she was damaged goods after that Sunday morning new show caper.
"...or too terrified to put a bullet into a fellow Muslim."
WIth you making such a ridiculous comment, I seriously doubt that you care about this woman removing herself from consideration. All you see is black "animal," and you probably find it surprising that it is even wearing clothes.
