(CNN) - Public officials reacted to the Friday shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where a law enforcement official said nearly 20 people died, at least 10 of them students.
President Barack Obama's spokesman said he and Obama "feel enormous sympathy" for the families of the children.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman:
"Senator Lieberman and his staff are closely monitoring the situation in Newtown, CT. The Senator's and Hadassah's prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy today. What is important now it to give the first responders and local authorities the support needed to address the situation as it changes and keep the community of Newtown safe."
Rep. Chris Murphy, whose district includes Newtown, Conn.:
"I am shocked and saddened by the horrific news from Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning, and I pray that kids, teachers, staff, and families reach safety as quickly as possible. While we don't have much information right now, our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones."
Rep. Joe Courtney of Connecticut:
"Today's shooting in Newtown is an horrific and senseless tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, families, and the Sandy Hook Elementary School community. The people of Connecticut stand ready to provide help and support to all those affected."
Rep. Ron Barber of Arizona, a victim in the Arizona mass shooting which also injured former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords:
"As those of us in Tucson know, senseless acts such as these tear at the very fabric of a community. In times like this, we come together to support each other. To the people of Newtown, we are with you today and in the days, weeks and months ahead."
