Obama receiving updates on Connecticut shooting

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama has been informed of the school shooting in Connecticut and will receive regular updates throughout the day, the White House said on Friday.

His press secretary Jay Carney said Obama was informed of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. ET by his homeland security adviser John Brennan.

"The president is receiving regular updates as more information becomes available about this incident and as the day proceeds, if we get more information and as we get more information, we'll certainly provide it to you," Carney said.

He said Obama had spoken by phone with FBI Director Robert Muller and Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy. On the call, he was updated with the latest information on the shooting and expressed his condolences.

Asked whether the shooting would have any policy implications on gun control, Carney said that discussion was for another day.

"I think it's important on a day like today to view this - as I know the president, as a father, does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do - which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected and to do everything we can to support state and local law enforcement and support those who are enduring what appears to be a very tragic event."

"There is, I'm sure, will be, rather, a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates but I don't think today is that day," he said.

The president has cancelled plans to travel to Portland, Maine on Wednesday as a result of the shooting, according to a release from the White House.

Today we pray for the blessed children and adults who lost their lives senselessly and the families left to grieve.
Tomorrow we rise up against those who refuse to recognize the need for gun regulation.
Obtaining guns on the internet without background checks is a good start.

It is way , way past due something is done about the assult rifles and gun control LAWS ! The NRA needs to be regulated and controled period. I hope to god President Obama puts the skids on these guys and makes it illegal to have an assult rifle period. It is NOT nessisary for anyone to have a gun with a clip that fires more than 6 shots period. Assult rifles belong in the Military and on the battle fields. Too bad if the NRA doesn't like it . And too bad for the Republican Party who defends these guys and sides in with them.

    @ paperpusher and Pete d.

In case you missed it, I have spoken out against BOTH sides for not taking action, including the president. It is distrubing and needs to be dealt with. Period.
