Washington (CNN) - President Obama has decided to nominate Sen. John Kerry to be the next secretary of state and could make a formal announcement as early as next week, a Democrat who spoke to Kerry told CNN Saturday.
The expected nomination follows U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's decision to withdraw her name from consideration for the post. She dropped out of the running Thursday after weeks of criticism from Republicans about statements she made about the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, which left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Susan Rice would have been a great Secretary of State .
Thanks John McCain for nothing !
Anyone want to bet how long it will take for Mr. McConnell or one of the other useless Republicans in the Senate to announce a block or filibuster on Mr. Kerry's nomination?
I believe there is a strong chance that John Kerry would make an excellent Secretary of State. He has both the brains and the government experience to do a great job; and if the NeoCons try to stop his appointment, it will backfire and just provide more evidence of the intransigence of today's elected Republican officials. Any Republican who tries to attack Kerry in the sleazy way that Rice was attacked will find that there's a reason Notre Dame is called "the fighting Irish". I know it's not politically correct to categorize different groups of people, but the Irish have been known as great fighters for centuries. If they try sleaze -ball with Senator Kerry, a few of them will get "knee-capped", which was a tactic used by a lot of Irishmen in the late 19th and early 20th century. They would smash a baseball bat or its equivalent into a man's knee from the side, and leave him crippled for the rest of his life. there are a few NeoCons who deserve that kind of punishment, either literally or figuratively, for the damage they are causing to America today through intransigence, lack of education and/or gray matter, and lack of common sense ( also the inability to come out of denial and realize what the November election should have told them.
Who's running that party at the executive level, Priebus? That guy can hardly parallel park while chewing gum. I suspect his resting pulse rate is 20 or 30 points higher than his IQ, and is a Central Casting perfect political hack who illustrates the Peter Principle – he's managed to get himself promoted to a job that's beyond his competence level.
A new candidate would be a better choice.
Because of what has happened, Kerry will be an unpopular choice, disliked and distruted by democratic voters who resented the unfounded attacks on Susan Rice, and seen as the GOP's inside man.
I'm ok with Kerry..... Even if he hides his yacht in another state to avoid taxes....
I would hope that there be other people on the list since Kerry is likely a dependable vote in the Senate.
If i were Obam I'd have hagel as defense and Huntsman as sec state.
yes both republicans but both with heads screwed on and would do a good job. all it would need is a couple of hours of interview with both to see if the will not directly try to upset existing strategy and policy.
I always did have crazy ideas.

Hodgson.
