(CNN) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will name GOP Rep. Tim Scott as the replacement for outgoing Sen. Jim DeMint, according to Republican sources in South Carolina and Washington.
Good choice. I hope he does not follow the Republican line and oppose assault weapons ban.

Hope fully this guy will be a substantial pick rather than a token black man. If he turned out to be a carnival-barker like Allen West it will be a sad addition.

Hope he functions as a member of the Senate and not of the GOP Tea Party or hardline democrat group. We need someone who can be more moderate and open to both arguements and make a decision for the majority and not the minority of Americans.

Even an Oreo is a better choice than many of the ultra-right-wingers she could have picked. The Republican Party will be desperately looking for minorities to improve the group photo for 2014. Maybe... just maybe... they will not only change their group photo but will in fact learn to embrace cultures, races, and religions other than that of intolerant, white, Christians.

Wiki Tim Scott and you will find one of the most conservative sheep in the country. A Tea Party favorite, this is the guy who went to great lengths to ensure enshrinement of the ten commandments on display at a public building. Once sued by the ACLU the commandments came down, which costs the government serious jing. His comment, "Well, it's ok as long as it ain't my money."
Typical of Haley's mentality to put such an extremist in the US Senate.

GOP Never Learns
Tim Scott is simply another right-wing, homophobic, Bible-thumping Republican. His color is the reason he was chosen but make no mistake – his heart is all about the intolerant evil the American people have grown to reject. Republicans never learn. He's like a black Sarah Palin – chosen for all of the wrong reasons.

Where is Tim Scott on the issues? He`s a member of Congress, no? So what leadership positions has he taken? Where is he on the gun-enabled carnage our nation faces? Doe he believe in the "makers vs takers" philosophy of Mitt Romney & the country club Republicans? Does he back the failed 12-year experiment of the Bush tax cuts for "job creators"? How about comprehensive immigration reform? Corporate welfare?
Don`t give this man a pass because he has brown skin, brown skinned people. Reveal him; in the word`s of former NY Giants coach Bill Parcells`s, " You are what your record says you are". so who, precisely is Tim Scott.

ok so the GOP knows they have a minority issue and lack of diversity so I guess being possibly the only AA senator in congress is a good start. Wow thank God Allen West wasn't in SC she might have picked him.

Lionel,
What is your definition of an assault weapon? Sen Feinstein, in a knee-jerk reaction to the recent tragedies, stated she will propose legislation on the first day of the new Congressional session to ban "assault weapons". Her proposal defines any weapon with larger than a 10 round magazine as an assault weapon. Most semi-automatic handguns have 15-19 depending on the caliber. A semi-automatic handgun isn't an assault weapon by any stretch of the imagination.
I am a Republican and willing to discuss true assault weapon bans like the AR-15 and similar but not hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns. At the end of the day it's the individual who chooses to commit the heinous crimes not a specific weapon that is any more volatile.

Well, of what I have read so far, this doesn't seem like a great piece of news. Of course they would choose an African American. I'm just surprised it wasn't a Latin American... They want to make the people believe they care about racial diversities by electing different races... well, that isn't going to change much in my opinion. We will see how far the lies go to make America vote for people like these.
