House won't vote on any deal until after cliff deadline

UPDATE 4:03 p.m. ET: The House of Representatives will not vote Monday on any potential fiscal cliff deal, meaning the U.S. is technically headed over the fiscal cliff. The House will wrap up Monday around 6:30 p.m. ET. After a House GOP Conference meeting at 5 p.m. ET they will have one vote series and then head out for the evening.

Washington (CNN) - House GOP sources told CNN the House is increasingly unlikely to vote on any fiscal cliff package until New Year's Day, after the midnight deadline and after tax rates have technically already gone up.

The reason is partly about process, but the benefit is political.

House GOP sources said the main reason the House is not likely to vote before the deadline is because the deal is not yet done, and it still has to go through the Senate–which takes time.

GOP leaders prefer to vote in broad daylight, sources said, instead of in the middle of the night.

"There is no difference in voting at 2 a.m. than tomorrow at 4 p.m.," one of the GOP sources said.

GOP sources admitted there is an added benefit to the Senate's delay: taxes would already be up, so lawmakers could argue that they are voting for tax cuts, as opposed to tax increases.

One GOP source also said that may help get more House Republicans to vote for the deal.

"I wouldn't overestimate it, but a handful may be the difference we need," the source said.

Publicly, House Republican leaders and aides say they remain in a holding pattern until details are released from negotiations between Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, and members are being told to stick around the Capitol.

The arrogance of Republican House members is truly dismaying. They are all acting like a bunch of French Aristocrats from 1788, but without any of the class.

This may well be the GOP's last chance to destroy our government, a task that even al Qaida could not achieve.

No, Tim: the GOP/TP can still hold the whole nation's credit rating hostage over the debt ceiling, if this attempt to destroy our government fails. What else can we expect from a bunch of thugs who signed Grover "I'd like to shrink government so small you could drown it in a bathtub" Norquist's treasonous pledge.

Sickening, just sickening. I feel sorry for all the folks whose unemployment runs out tomorrow. Too bad Boehner , Cantor, Ryan & McConnell aren't some of them.

Are these people serious? Are they using their heads? Are they ready to force the economy back to the recession because of their greedy? This is beyond me!

  5. Fire the GOP

Fire the GOP. They are useless and have proven time after time that they do not know how to govern. The ONLY thing they know how to do is abide by Grover Norquist.

The Teapublicans own this one. No amount of Teapublican BS can change the fact that they refused to act and taxes will go up on everyone. 2014 cannot get here soon enough. Off they go into the dust bin of irrelevance.

As usual, the republicans in the house think the American public is stupid, and treat us as such. They will have to have Fox News working overtime to convince the public of this political charade.

Grow up, Congress. It is so far beyond ridiculous that an elected official will create drama and go home because a decision tomorrow makes them feel better than making the same decision today. No one in their right mind is going to view your decision differently. All I hope voters will pay attention to us who continues to play games with OUR future. Get to work or resign.

To you ignorant right-wingers, 70% of all welfare recipients are white, vote Republican, and reside in "red" states. Wanna cut off welfare? Hell yes, I'm all for it, it's your side that'll suffer more.

If they can not come up with a compromise to avert the fiscal cliff then we as tax payers need to demand that all of the senate and house members not receive any pay at all till they fix the mess that is about to be created. They are truly overpaid and really don't care about their own country.

I must say that as a federal Civil Servant that dedicates himself to the Department of Defense and our troops overseas, I now have to worry about my job and what the impact to my familiy will be. Im very disapponinted that my New Years is packed with worry and doubt, because of political push and shove. I wish the best to the lawmakers, and hope that I do not end up on the unemployement line myself. A Great thanks for my years of dedication to the United States of America.

Why are Obama & Biden negotiating with Reid & Pelosi? Shouldn't they be talking across the aisle? Wow.

What a bunch of baloney! I've voted as a Dem most often but this congress tells me it is definitely time for a third party.maybe then more people would vote which is a major problem in itself. What happens in the next few days will be a bunch of posturing on both sides and the middle class will get taken again and the countries debt will still keep going up because these idiots want to protect their own interest.

The Democrats have complained so much and so often about the Bush tax cuts, but they constantly keep renewing them.
