Bush 41 mending, watches football in hospital

(CNN) - Former President George H.W. Bush continues to recover from his maladies after over a month in a Houston hospital, his office said Monday.

The latest statement on the 41st president's health contained no new details about his condition or treatment, but did allow he had recently been watching football.

"President Bush's recovery is continuing at The Methodist Hospital, where in recent days he has taken great pride watching big football wins by Texas A&M and the Houston Texans," the statement from Bush's office read.

"While no immediate timeline has been set for the President's discharge, the Bushes wish to thank everyone for their many kind messages."

He was moved out of the hospital's intensive care unit just over a week ago where had been listed in guarded condition while receiving treatment for what his spokesman Jim McGrath called "a stubborn fever."

Bush was first hospitalized for bronchitis and remained there while doctors monitored a lingering cough. He has been hospitalized since November 23.

Doctors were at several points optimistic that his release was imminent. McGrath said in December that Bush had been undergoing physical therapy in preparation for discharge.

After release from the intensive care unit, McGrath said Bush's "exchanges with doctors and nurses now include singing." He received visits from family members including his wife over the Christmas holiday, and was serenaded by the gospel-turned-country quartet of the 1970s and '80s the Oak Ridge Boys.

Oak member Joe Bonsall said of their telephone performance for the former president, "We asked what song he would like to hear and he said 'Elvira,' so we blasted some 'oom pop a mau mau's' in the direction of Houston, Texas."

The ups and downs of his health, as described by his spokesman, were reported in the media. His chief of staff sought to quell concerns, writing in a late December letter to Bush's friends and supporters, "Is he sick? Yes. Does he plan on going anywhere soon? No. He has every intention of staying put. He would ask me to tell you to please 'put the harps back in the closet.' "

Four months older than former President Jimmy Carter, the 88 year-old Bush is the oldest of the living former presidents.

I sincerly want to express my true desire for a speedy and lasting recover.I believe Mr Bush is a good kindhearted man who truely loves his family. And when he served as Our President he cared for all of us Americans as his extended family.May Our LORD place his loving hands over him and Bless him. Thus cleansing him of all his sickness.
