Obama signs bill, gets Secret Service protection for life

Washington (CNN) – With the stroke of a pen Thursday, President Barack Obama gave himself and his wife Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives.

The new law, which passed the House and Senate in December, designates that all former U.S. presidents who served after January 1, 1997, along with their spouses, receive protection from the Secret Service for their entire lifetimes – meaning former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are also covered. The law also stipulates that children of presidents receive protection until the age of 16.

Lifetime government-provided security for former presidents was the law of the land until 1997, when Congress passed legislation limiting Secret Service protection to ten years after leaving office.

The 1997 law said any president serving before January 1, 1997 would still receive the lifelong protection. That means with the law signed Thursday, every former president – Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush – along with Obama will continue to receive Secret Service details for the rest of their lives.

Happy Congress approve this one!! Pres. Obama, the First Lady and all of their family members need to have security 24-7! The DOMESTIC TERRORISTS/U. S. Taliban will wipe them out if they're able to get close enough! Remember the Tea Party Patriots that marched wearing their guns and holster with "Don't Tread on Me" signs shortly after the President was in office! Those folk and some of the right-wing talking heads on the radio are beyond crazy....don't trust them! These folks deserve to be monitored 24-7! Where's the monitoring drone???
More importantly I'm happy to see that all of our living former Presidents are protected as well! They've earned it and DESERVE it!!

Just MORE government waste. Former Presidents, have no real need for that protection 4 yrs. after leaving office.

The time frame should have been reduced........not extended to life.

Waste, waste, and more waste..........that's all the U.S. Government is about, today!
And you are basing this on what? Your personal and obvious dislike for the current occupant, or an actual, thoughtful analysis-wait, that's right, you've never shown you can do that. Funny, I doubt you thought much about government waste when W was flushing billions in a war that was off the books.

@Concerned Citizen – I would like to know what the cost of something like this would be. I see no mention of this.
Will be a whole lot LESS than the lifetime pension and healthcare benefits for the RWNJ's who will be leaving Congress in 2014!

Good bill. Why are people complaining about this being a waste? All those f22 raptors that were built and never used now that's a waste.

Dear Woman in California. Please research who have been political assassins in this country. Hint: They aren't Republicans.
They would be now. Do you hang out at the local Book Depository, by any chance?

The biggest threat Bush ever received was when he dodged those shoes like the Matrix. Please believe there are no hate groups out there making scarecrow Bush's with nooses around their necks. I know everybody thinks the worst of blacks but we don't have groups teaching hatred of others because of color. Why don't you google racist tweets night of the election.

@freedom – Boy, he's going to milk this system for all its worth in the next four years
it would appear that all the RWNJ's posting on this story failed to READ it.. much like they failed 2nd grade comprehension. Congress passed the legislation, not the POTUS. Sure it benefits him.
Perhaps the RWNJ' should focus on whining about the automatic ANNUAL 5% pay raise that Congress voted itself in when the Grand Obstructionist Party had control ???

That's right – that's his plan – disarm law-abiding citizens – and control them with not only marxist policies, but by force.

Dear Tom, the Republicans have treated President Obama like a run-away-slave. I am very concerned for the safety of the President and his family because of all the racial hatred exhibited by the GOP. Very glad The President and First Lady have secret service protection for life.

They dont feel safe in America and dont foresee being safe in America even after the recent gun control talks? They need someone (with something(s)) to protect them – for life? What?

Boy, he's going to milk this system for all its worth in the next four years – and to his benefit – not the country's benefit. Guess who's going to pay for that secret service? Not him. He has no integrity.

You're b(+@hing about the CURRRENT President of the United States. What about all the living FORMER Presidents? Are you angry about THEM getting SS protection as well?
