Details emerge on gun control proposal coming Wednesday

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will unveil Wednesday a package of gun control proposals that, according to a source, will include universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will announce the proposals, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday.

Everyone needs to take a chill pill.
I agree that the mentally ill shouldn't be allowed to buy guns but it's not the guns but the people.
According to USA Weekend 1-11-1-13-2013 60 children that's right 60 children are killed every week by cars and trucks that back over them. Should we ban all cars and trucks that don't have backup cameras no we should hold people accountable and should be the same case with guns. Why don't we have the same outrage about people backing over children that's easy no press coverage.
Every time something happens with guns it's front page news and when you look at all the people that buy guns tell me how many of them go out and commit mass murders not that many because they follow the laws that are in place now.
All I heard was when we are allowed to get a concealed weapons permit murders would go threw the roof guess what they went down.
Take a breath and let's discuss the terrible murder of 20 children at a school and act like we have some common sense and not some knee jerk reaction.
A ban on all semi automatic weapons is not only stupid but the people that are pushing this really don't have a clue about guns and how they work.
I keep hearing that we should ban all assault weapons we don't have any on the market now. An assault weapon is a gun that can fire three rounds with one pull of the trigger, fire one round with one pull of the trigger, and car fire full automatic with just holding the trigger down. It just about the hardest permit to get is for a fully automatic weapon and if you want to put a cost on that why not charge $50,000 a year for each permit.
Please know what you are talking about before you take the same path as almost every socialist and communist country out there in the world. It wouldn't take long before that could happen with all the BS going on out there right now and that includes Obama and his party.

The "task force" makes no distiction between "assault weapons" and semi-automatic guns that our grandfathers went rabbit hunting with. The gunsmiths of today have created themselves a problem by imitating the military designs on simple guns that are in no way "military assault weapons". And the anti-gun crowd doesn't have even a foggy idea of the difference.

hey CNN – isn't this getting sort of ridiculous ? I mean, all the posts & comments on the "Gun" thing . . . To be perfectly honest, I've seen & heard Gabby & Mark Kelly's interviews with Blitzer / A/C 360 / Pierce / and in my opinion . . . I AGREE with Kelly's Stance on the Gun thing . . . I used to be an avid hunter, believe in the 2nd amendment, keep my rifles locked UP . . . If I want to take up the sport of "target shooting" then what's wrong with a gun to do that with . . . I Have No Problem With All Of That . . . There is some people out there that thinks everybody here in this country should have Bonnie & Clyde type of Firearms in their homes. They aren't trying to Take Away Your Guns. LOL – – this shows you how people are actually "disfunctionate" ( or is that a word) Anyway – no matter what, I think Mark Kelly's interviews / comments / & Opinions are more in line with most of the people in this country. The government Isn't going to take your guns away, they Just want to make sure that they don't have RPG's / Grenades / and Tommy guns / aren't laying around their house, so their idiot kids ( that are unstable) don't get their hands on them.

Just a thought, but how about actually implementing and funding the existing gun laws already on the books? Obama has failed in this department. There are programs that were started before he became president that have not been enforced. Programs were already in place to ensure that the mentally ill would not be able to purchase guns. More people should be asking why these types of programs have failed miserably under Obama's watch. Banning assault weapons, and/or trying to redefine what assault weapons are, appear to me, who is not a gun owner or enthusiast, as a knee jerk reaction only to enact legislation for a liberal agenda. I'd rather the President address real policy that will actually affect lives. I'm holding out judgement, but I've not yet seen real discussion on this from Obama.

I think gun advocates need to sit down and watch a movie called "Lord of War" starring Nicholas Cage and Ethan Hawke. There's an exert from that movie that sticks with me to this day when Hawke's character says "No, nine out of ten war victims today are killed with assault rifles and small arms – like yours. Those nuclear weapons sit in their silos. Your AK-47, that's the real weapon of mass destruction."

These seem sensible, if somewhat conservative partial solutions to the problem of gun violence in America.
Amusing and sad to watch the NRA outwardly supporting the gun industry (the "elitist" ad), and by extension those who murder our children, and the foolish Republicans/TEA Party members lining up behind them.
Mindless radicalism (including even threats of impaechment) demonstrate just how great a lost cause the Right has become. They support the so-called rights (as if all rights don't have limitations) over life (irony there)- our lives, our childrens lives, just so they can parade about with guns- as if any of them would ever lift a finger to help someone, our people or this country. A truly disgusting display.

I am sorry to say there's absolutely nothing you can do about that. the NRA can stop looking for other people put the blame on someone else to point the finger at.# guns don't kill people people kill people.#2 every shooter that has cause a major shooting has not had a criminal record

As of today, a month and a day since the Newtown massacre 917 Americans have lost their lives to guns. This is a greater number of dead per day than any war the U.S. has been involved in since Viet Nam. No other first-world nation has experienced this many gun deaths in a year, much less a month.
This is the NRA's so-called "freedom" in action.

The NRA has committed two faux pax in as many days. First, they undermine their entire violent video games and movies argument by releasing a violent video game aimed at four year olds, no less. The entire "blame it on violence in media" argument is now permanently off the table. That was yesterday.

Today, the NRA has released a controversial ad that brings President Obama's daughters into the debate. I have had four words for the extremists who support the NRA's position since the Newtown tragedy: home schooling; private school. These extremists are starting to sound like Klingons. God help us all if they begin to act like them, as many have promised.

So, with the plan not even officially unveiled, the GOP has responded by comparing the President of the United States to hated Iraqi leader Saddam Huessein; threatened the President with Impeachment; dragged his daughters into the fray essentially declaring what they get in protection needs to be extended to all children (one VERY BIG government solution with huge associated costs)- all because the President has responded to the public's appropriate call for action after 5 mass shootings in the space of 1 year. A revolting, anti-American display of disrespect.

Let's not forget the rest of the GOP's insult to America: the filibusters (or threats thereof) of any legislation that benefits Americans; the endless blockage of the appointments for the Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Labor-do the Republicans actually think their delay, linger and wait tactics benefit the operation of government?Their faux outrage over their manufatured budget and deficit crisis. They cut taxes for ten years then were shocked that there were trillion dollar deficts- which they now want you and I, the poor and the elderly to pay for by forgoing Social Security and Medicare- oh, and they STILL want to cut taxes for the rich.

These people are less than scum. They are doing te work of our enemies- without even attempting to hide their glee in their destructive acts. The only good news is that with each outrageous act, their popularity contiues to free-fall. November 2014 cannot come soon enough!

President Barack Obama will unveil Wednesday a package of gun control proposals
The President hasn't even unveiled his proposal and these hillbilly sheriffs from West Podunk have ALREADY come out saying that they will NOT adhere to the President's proposal. They did'nt even have the decency and common sense to wait for the unveiling of that which they unilaterally oppose.....sight unseen.
