(CNN) – First lady Michelle Obama, a pop culture icon in her own right, shared the stage Saturday night with some star power that rivaled her.

She appeared at the Kids’ Inaugural Ball alongside pop stars Katy Perry, Usher and the cast of “Glee.”

Boehner faces own challenges at beginning of Obama's second term

Washington (CNN) - As speaker of the House, John Boehner faced battles on two fronts during his first term: fights with President Barack Obama on a series of high-profile fiscal issues, and internal skirmishes with conservative rank-and-file Republicans who openly defied him because they didn't think he was doing enough to cut spending.

And as Obama takes the oath of office and begins to address the challenges of his second term, his on-again, off-again negotiating counterpart faces his own set of challenges in the coming weeks.

Attending the inauguration? Bundle up

(CNN) - Whether you have front-row seats or will stand among the masses on the National Mall on Monday, the weather will be the same: Chilly.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a 40% chance of precipitation Monday, and temperatures are expected to be in the 20s as thousands of people line up ahead of sunrise, angling for the best view of the Capitol podium where President Barack Obama will take the oath of office.

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will lay out the values and vision for his second term in his Inaugural Address on Monday, setting up more detailed remarks on policy in his February 12 State of the Union.

A source with knowledge of the president's upcoming speech spoke to CNN about it on the condition of not being identified publicly.

Obamas, Bidens participate in Day of Service

(CNN) - President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden participated in a National Day of Service on Saturday, joining what event organizers say are volunteers around the country in local service projects. First lady Michelle Obama and the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, also took part.

Obama joined in a project at Burrville Elementary School in Washington, picking up a paintbrush and aiding volunteers who were staining a bookcase.

Obama rolls with 'Taxation Without Representation' plates

(CNN) – In a sign of solidarity, President Barack Obama began using the standard license plate for the District of Columbia on Saturday on presidential vehicles. The plates famously state "Taxation Without Representation."

The head car in his motorcade on Monday bore plate number 800 002 as the president rolled across town to volunteer at an elementary school.
