Chicago mayor asks banks to cut off gun makers

Washington (CNNMoney) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday asked big banks to stop lending to gun makers as a way to pressure the industry to support tougher gun control laws.

Emanuel, mayor of the nation's third-largest city and former chief of staff to President Obama, wrote the CEOs of Bank of America and TD Bank, since they finance gun makers that lobby against federal and local efforts to toughen gun control laws.

I'm sure he finds gun control a sensitive topic, most especilly with the gun violence that has exploded since Chicago's handgun ban was defeated by groups of people who don't even live in Chicago.

Sounds like something Obama would do. Oh wait, he was Obama's buddy at one time wasn't he?

You already have tough gun control laws in Chicago. What did it get you?

506 people murdered in Chicago in 2012. Contrast that with the fact that 371 Americans were killed in the war in Afghanistan in 2012.

434 school-age children were shot in Chicago in 2012.

Only 25% of the murders in Chicago in 2012 resulted in an arrest.

Seems like Mayor Emanuel needs to focus on his own city first.

Maybe the banks ought to cut off the mayor, instead.

Here we go again, blaming the guns. Guns don't kill; people kill. Mr. Emanuel is once again telling US businesses how they should operate using the horrific tragedy in CT as justification. Shame on you Emanuel, but what else can America expect from a Chicago politician?

My wife's set of Henckel kitchen knives look scary. They make me uncomfortable. Someone could hurt you with them. What do you need sharp knives for? Lets ban them.

It's only the beginning of what they want to control. No more "Big Gulps", salt, pain prescriptions from doctors, guns, and now politicians want to tell independent banks who they can and can't do business with even though gun manufacturers are legit businesses. We are jsut like the frog in the pot of water while the temp is turned up. Before yu know it you're boiled Americans

I suggest that you stop listening to whomever told you that. Chicago's handgun ban was overturned a couple of years ago, and it had been suspended for the duration as the case was being litigated. People who make that claim sound like people who REALLY ARE out of touch with reality.

Other states with lax gun laws facilitating murders in Chicago...that's what it got them. Gun regulation needs to become national and standardized. Otherwise it is the lowest common denominator...i.e., the states with the loosest gun laws and biggest gun fanatic cultures...that set the standard for EVERYONE else and leaves it all open to the criminals and nutjobs to keep on shooting people.
