(CNN) – Nearly a month after last year's presidential election, Mitt Romney's campaign donated almost $90,000 to the American Red Cross, federal election filings showed Friday.
The donation also came a month after Superstorm Sandy pummeled the East Coast, coinciding with the final week of the presidential contest. Both candidates were forced to put their campaigns on hold briefly as residents of New York and New Jersey assessed the widespread damage and destruction.
As President Barack Obama juggled campaigning with his duties as commander-in-chief, Romney also attempted to show compassion for Sandy victims, replacing what was originally a campaign rally with a "relief event" where supporters brought supplies that were then shipped to affected states.
After addressing the crowd briefly, the GOP nominee hopped off a makeshift stage to glad-hand with supporters and collect items as they filed past to donate relief goods like bottled water, canned foods and fleece blankets.
Later it was revealed that some of the supplies being collected were actually purchased by the Romney campaign, filling out what could have been an embarrassing photo-op for the GOP nominee.
Romney's campaign told reporters that a Red Cross warehouse in New Jersey was accepting the provisions, despite a statement on the charity's website saying they "do not accept or solicit individual donations or collections of items" because processing them requires resources better used on other projects.
The Red Cross said then that they "appreciated" the support from the Romney campaign, but would "encourage individuals who want to help to consider making a financial donation or making an appointment to give blood."
At his event, Romney encouraged supporters to donate money to the Red Cross, and his campaign said the candidate himself had personally donated to the group. They did not divulge the size of Romney's contribution.
CNN's Robert Yoon and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.
Yet, the people on Staten Island has no food or clothes for weeks, while the Red Cross was staying in barely hit Manhattan at a $350 per night hotel. I would never give to the Red Cross again. They partied in Manhattan while Staten Island was ignored. Disgusting.
The people of Staten Island did take donations of clothes and canned food.
romney the tax cheat should be working for them full time instead of working for the marriot corp tax cheats who were fined 87 milliom dallars for tax evasion by the irs for useing romneys son of boss tax cheat program. and they hired him again, as they say , once a cheat always a cheat. romney should be in jail but money talks.
unbelievable–CNN is trying to make a Romney charitable donation into a "hit piece" against Romney.....election is over, folks and "OBAMA WON" as he has stated many times......leave Romney alone....
Good for them to give after all the attention had past. The intent and the action sounds well ment.
That's nice.
yet another partial write-off for Flip Flopney's taxes?
Aww look at Fox-Lite still trying to make Pinocchio look like a real boy......
What no photo op ??? oh thats right for the bamman only
How much has Romney ever donated to UNCF? He spoke before the NAACP, but is he a member. I know of lots of politicans who are, and do it just to get votes. It costs less than $50. For a mere $10,000, he could make his wife and and all of kids lifetime members a couple of times over.

Didn't read the article Moose? Maybe this will help:
"Later it was revealed that some of the supplies being collected were actually purchased by the Romney campaign, filling out what could have been an embarrassing photo-op for the GOP nominee."
What I can say is: "There is one President at a time". Also it was bad timing for Romney (though he showed the heart of extending his hand of help). He could had contacted the Office of the President and see how he can help and what help is most needed.

didn't you see Flip and Queen Ann mingling with the "little people" in Costco? I bet they planned that for a week, wondering what "regular" people wear for clothing and what they actually buy? Give it up Bullwinkle. Focus your lemming-like hatred somewhere else
Wow. So that is like what, me giving $25 bucks by the same ratio? Well, good for him, its more that the Republicans in Congress did for 3 months.
Why is CNN still reporting on this guy? The election is over.
If he can spend $77,000 every year on a horse, then I say he should donate more than $90,000, which was paid for by his campaign, not Mitt Romney personally.
Romney continues to be a better man than Obama. Obama abandons issues as soon as they serve his purpose. Remember how he was going to cut through all the red tape to help the hurricane victims? Now he doesn't even acknowledge them. Remember how he was going to have a Jobs Counsel to help determine ways to create more jobs? They're gone now that the election is over. Remember how he suddenly decided he was in favor of gay marriage. Not even on his radar now. Obama is a user. Romney was at least sincere. Wrong choice America.

Oh, Rudy. That horse will always bring a smile to my face. What WERE they thinking to use it as a tax deduction knowing full well it would become public knowledge? I wonder if the Romney's ever considered what the child deduction is compared to a horse deduction. $77,000 versus what .... a few thousand?
Romney is a far more caring person than Obama ever thought about being.
just a phony from the begining, at least we could of had a good laugh at ron paul or the other wack job from texes......mitt just painted a pic. that he thought eveeryone wanted to see, and when he was called on any of them ...like his econamny plan it was just a bunch of bull to have the people believe........americans are to smart nowdays, the gop bull worked for to many years, so go ressell up some latinos is thier new plan......lol they climbed over fences annd crawled through tunnells to get here, they will never fall for thier line of garbagge....we love them at the gop....yeah right !!
Robme has rightfully earned the title of "President of the Stupid Party – LOL
Yayyyyy....The GOP, the party of charity, but more accurately "STUPIDITY"
you libs are unbelievable.........are you enjoying your "jobless recovery" prez?
What a pathetic person Robme turned out to be. Lied himself to viability within the Party of Stupid and got out classed in the Presidential Election. You can't buy dignity and character. But of course if you are going for the "Stupid" vote anything is possible
Its actually comical to think this guy had a chance of being president....What a horrible nightmare for this country to experience. Thank goodness the intelligent vote outweighed the dumb vote in this country.
