Obama made his pitch in a statement to reporters at the White House, urging Congress to pass a measure that would put off imminent spending cuts - known as sequestration - that were part of a 2011 debt ceiling deal.

(CNN) – A group whose aim is to elect progressive Democrats to Congress released an ad Tuesday hitting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for opposing gun control legislation while receiving campaign donations from gun manufacturers.
The spot, from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, will run on broadcast and cable television in McConnell's home state, as well as in Washington, D.C., including on CNN. The group said they would spend $27,000 initially to air the ad for one week.

Washington (CNN) – The number two House Republican said Tuesday that he supports beefed up background checks for gun sales, an indication of where potential gun control legislation could be headed on Capitol Hill.
Rep. Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, told CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash that a system put in place in his home state of Virginia following the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech could be a model for a nationwide measure.
