'We've had plenty of spending cuts,' says Pelosi

Washington (CNN) – As lawmakers continue looking for ways to reduce the federal deficit, House Democratic leaders remain committed to a program that includes tax increases and some spending cuts.

That was the message from Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who said Sunday that cuts, if they come, must be from subsidies to oil companies rather than from Medicaid, Social Security or Pell grants.

"What we do need is more revenue, and more cuts, but I would like to see that a big, balanced, bold proposal," Pelosi said on "Fox News Sunday." She reiterated her stance that Republicans are promoting a "false argument" by saying America has a spending problem.

"What we need is growth," she said, pointing to increased income tax revenue that would be generated if more Americans head back to work. "We need growth with jobs. And if you have spending cuts, the education of our children, other investments, on the National Institutes of Health, where you are hindering growth, you're not going to reduce the deficit," Pelosi continued.

Democrats and Republicans are currently locked in a battle over how best to reduce the ballooning federal debt, with Democrats in favor of raising tax rates on wealthy Americans and Republicans pushing for cuts in spending, including to Medicare, the health insurance program for older Americans.

Pelosi said Sunday she was opposed to raising the eligibility age for Medicare, currently at 65, arguing instead for slowing the rise of medical costs.

"Don't you think you ought to see if raising the age really does save money?" Pelosi asked. "Those people are not going to evaporate from the face of the Earth for two years. They're going to have medical needs and they're going to have to be attended to. And the earlier intervention for it, the less the cost will be and the better the quality of life."

Listen–we need to boost this Economy, for this we need SPENDING–not tightening belt at spending. We need to raise TAX ON RICH. It fills deficit. Do not cut INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING. You are heading in wrong direction then. We need to tighten IMMIGRATION. Reduce the number of immigrations. High Unempolymnt is at peak scenario. God bless!!!

The GOPpers will howl, but she's right. The spending cuts are why this FY's deficit is down. It is also why the recovery is slowing to a crawl. Whole agencies (like BATF) virtually de-funded. 70,000 federal workers gone. Cuts to Medicaid, school funding programs and law enforcement hiring grants. Heaven forbid we cut back on what the military is spending, or the gifts to big oil. Enough already. We have the lowest tax rates in more than a generation, we cannot cut our way to responsible budgets. Congress must pass one first- one that isn't full of TEA Party nonsense.

Why is it that we are always told that spending cuts result in fewer teachers, policemen, or the ability to defend ourselves? It's a con job to prevent them from cutting the budget and laying off the dead beats, the administrators, the mooches that perform redundant useless functions that suck away the budget from those that we want to support. How about cutting that part of the budget Mrs Pelosi? Or are you suggesting that the US Government is running a lean efficient cost effective system? NOT! Its not news to anyone that you will say anything to play the political ping pong contest with the Repubs. Time for term limits to send all the career politicians home.

Democrat's are like Blimpy from the Popeye cartoon. "I'll gladly give you a spending cut next Tuesday for a Tax Raise today". Funny how it never becomes Tuesday. You are spending too much money Mrs Pelosi. No businesses are hiring because (unlike you) they have to make a profit to stay in business, and there are too many like you seeking ways to separate a dollar from a man's wallet.

Please explain: Which party cut taxes and raised spending in the last decade? Which Presidents tripled and doubled the national debt in the '80s?

Republicans are good for one thing only-screwing up the economy!

But they haven't cut any spending.... They have only cut their future forecasted spending. Their calculated savings also includes interest saved from not borrowing money AND they are including the influx of money from the tax increases on the rich (Even though Harry Reid says otherwise).

I know how we can fix the economy. Tax everyone 100% and let the government decide who gets what. Then we can build the most advanced naval fleet in the world and sail it out into the pacific and blow it up. Because war is good for economies. Destruction is good for economies.

Oh and spend money on stuff. If we spend money we dont have then well be prosperous.

Dan in Michigan, please step away from the purple tea, for your own sake. You talk about business not hiring because they need to make a profit? The truth is that MOST American business' are reaping record profits, and hiring GOP politicians instead of workers to get a free ride from the government, paid for by the money out of YOUR wallet.

Poor old Nancy and the delusional lefties can not control their hunger for other people's money. Bleeding small business owners is exactly the reason for the economy slowing to a crawl.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is correct. It is more important to stimulate the economy and fix the unemployment crisis before working on the budget deficit. Further cutting will only jeopardize the fragile economic recovery.

Part of the problem is that she views a tax increase as more money to spend, not for reducing the deficit.

i watched her interview today, and she has no grip on reality. We need to cut spending. What we really need is to have zero year budgeting. That way we would actually see if there are real spending cuts because we would compare to the prior year instead of to projected increases. Cut spending now.

We need to have Social Security and Medicare to adjust based on the longevity of the American population. I don't think that most people like that, but it needs to be done. There also needs to be an increased cost for Medicare based on income from wages and investments. Those items will slow the cost of those programs. I don't want to do them, the need is out there.

With that said, the Pentagon needs to be reformed so that we can get more "bang for the buck" as it were. The contractors need to be kept in line and prosecuted if there is fraud. The contracts need to be written that provide penalties for delays and over runs. There also needs to be the other side of the coin; bonuses for on time and under budget.

the headline: "We've had plenty of spending cuts" says Pelosi.

the facts: the article, and Pelosi, fail to name any spending cuts which have actually happened.

The 'people' are tired of the same old baloney of businesses not hiring because they have to make a profit. Businesses have separated more from man than his wallet. It takes brains to create jobs and hire, something that the current 'business' minds lack.

How about repealing NAFTA? Bill Clinton and his Democrat party destroyed any hope of good paying, union, manufacturing jobs staying or returning to the United States. We are a service economy. Service economies have two classes a lower class and upper class, no middle class. No good paying union manufacturing jobs = no significant tax revenue. The rich can't pay fir it all. Wake up America.
