First on CNN: NRA charges Obama’s efforts will lead to gun confiscation

Washington (CNN) – The National Rifle Association will assert that President Barack Obama’s attempt to enact new gun control laws will result in the “confiscation” of people’s firearms in a new web video scheduled to run in five states and the District of Columbia.

The video went online around the time Obama began delivering his State of the Union address Tuesday. In the speech, Obama mentioned his effort to reduce gun violence through legislative means.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told CNN that the organization based its warning on what he said is a Justice Department document, “Summary of Select Firearm Violence Prevention Strategies,” that was written in January and given to the NRA.

A Justice Department spokeswoman told CNN that she couldn’t immediately authenticate the document, but did confirm that Greg Ridgeway, whose name appears on it, is currently deputy director of the National Institute of Justice, which is the DOJ’s research arm.

“This internal Justice Department memo says ‘an assault weapons ban is unlikely to have an impact on gun violence,’ ” NRA’s chief lobbyist Chris Cox says in the video that was provided to CNN before it aired online. “Unlikely, that is, unless it comes with something else. Obama’s experts say that a gun ban, like the one being debated right now in Congress, will not work without mandatory ‘gun buybacks and not exemptions.’ ”

Cox continued, “Mandatory gun buybacks. That’s government confiscation of legal firearms owned by honest citizens.”

Cox also said the report noted that gun registration would need to be part of the equation for universal background checks to be effective.

“Requiring gun registration with the federal government, that’s an illegal abuse of privacy and freedom unprecedented in our history,” said Cox, who then urged people to call Congress and express opposition to new gun regulations.

One of the NRA’s main talking points for opposing new gun regulations is that the federal government is attempting to take away citizens’ Second Amendment rights to own firearms.

The NRA will spend about $100,000 in the next 24 hours to run the 1 minute and 40 second video on various news web sites in Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Colorado, South Dakota, and D.C., Arulanandam said. Each of the five states has a Democratic senator seeking re-election in 2014.

The emotional debate over enacting new gun regulations was visibly present in the House chamber as gun rights advocates and victims of gun violence attended Obama’s address to the joint session of Congress.

CNN's Terry Frieden and Todd Sperry contributed to this report

Old story, not a shred of evidence. We are sooooo happy that the NRA keeps shooting itself in the foot everytime someone opens his/her mouth. They make Herman Cain sound lucid and almost normal.

Registering your sport utility rifles in California led to gun confiscation back in the 90's.

If the NRA keeps this up they just might out-crazy the tea party.

    That's hard to do.

This is another scare tactic. The problem is that too many people don't secure their weapons and don't report when they are either lost or stolen. That needs to change. People need to be responsible with the weapons they have. If they can't do that, then they shouldn't have any kind of weapons.

Obama could appoint the reanimated corpse of Ronald Reagan as the nation's Gun Czar and the NRA would still have an issue with it. He did nothing about guns laws during his first term and they still whined non-stop about how he was "plotting" to get all the militia folks (like the gun who killed the bus driver and kidnapped a kid) to stock up on weapons. In fact, gun laws got significantly less restrictive during his first term and there was a measurable rise in gun violence and officer shootings (directly related to the lax laws). The NRA's action? Try to suppress the facts and statistics (just like Hitler did) making it illegal for doctors to even ask about gun use. "Were you shot?" is a question that could get an ER doctor jail time in Florida. Any group that tries to suppress information is the bad guy, period.

This article does not surprise me nor should it surprise most Americans. I do not think that the measure will be successful, however. This man that is in the Presidency did state, in his first campaign to occupy the Office, that he looked forward to radically changing our government. He also did state that he wanted to "disarm the United States to levels acceptable to peaceful Muslim nations." I must admit, however, that I am still wondering where such a Muslim nation exists. Meanwhile, this man that perceives himself above the law and not subject to acting within the laws of the United States nor bound by The Constitution or the Bill of Rights, represents a danger to this nation and the people of this country. We will not comply with "mandatory gun buybacks." We will not allow this man to overturn the Second amendment.

How many years can this same old bull be used in order to create panic and paranoia among gun lovers?. The fact is, no one has ever proposed taking everyone's guns and no one will. Obama has said repeatedly that he supports the 2nd amendment and has no problem with protecting your home or hunting with a gun. However, just as the first amendment has some limits, so must gun ownership. If amendment are absolute, you could threaten the president or any citizen and no one could do anything about it legally. The same is true when people carry the second amendment to extremes with military style assault weapons and oversize ammo magazines.
Wane LaPierre was all for universal background checks in a 1999 speech, but now opposes one of the most useful tools in preventing criminals and other unqualified people from getting guns without background checks.

The NRA needs to find a way to work with government instead of working against government. Instead of making all this noise the NRA could find some common ground. Gun owners and those who do not own guns should not be put into a we and them situation. Both sides should be respected and both sides need to work together for the good of all the people.

The NRA has made some ridiculous statements and they certainly are not endearing themselves to the American public.

When will anyone in the NRA (or republican party for that matter) take Logic 101? If they did, they would know that a slippery slope argument is logically fallacious, therefore weak.

Were not out of the woods yet, I bet it was though for CNN to put this article up. Listen and think before you post an article up on you site, or on TV. That’s how the NRA says afloat, at some point the tyrant will fall; and America will revert back to exercising our liberties with out the need to fall back to our last line of defense. After that you can say and do whatever you what to.

As Ron Paul said: Banning guns because of their misuse is like banning the First Amendment because one might libel or slander. The criminals aren't going to register or turn in their guns. Our fore fathers expressed the right and need to possess arms to protect us from a government that would take our rights away. Seems like that's why they want to step up gun control. "Patriot" Act. NDAA, Drone strikes against Americans without due process of any kind. We won't need the second amendment until they try to take it away.

The government should do whatever it takes to get assault weapons out of the hands of ordinary citizens. THERE IS ""NO REASON"" WHY THEY SHOULD HAVE EVER BEEN ALLOWED IN THE FIRST PLACE. The 2nd Ammendent DOES ""NOT"" mean every person should be at war with one another. Yet. that is what is happening. YOU DO NOT NEED ASSAULT WEAPONS TO DEFEND YOURSELF, FAMILY OR PROPERTY. YOU DO NOT NEED ASSAULT WEAPONS FOR HUNTING OR SPORT. There is no sane reason that ANYONE AND EVERYONE should be able to even own assault weapons.

As Obama pushes for a gun control vote, he must not be thinking beyond 2014 because he will have fewer seats in both houses. Didn't the demos learn anything in 1994?
