Mississippi politician urges gunmakers in Connecticut, elsewhere to relocate

(CNN) - Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn has invited gunmakers such as Colt to relocate to his state from others including Connecticut, where firearms have been a controversial issue since a school shooting there last December left 20 students and six adults dead.

The gun industry in Connecticut is being attacked and "demonized" because of national politics, Gunn said in a letter this week to Colt's Manufacturing Company CEO Dennis Veilleux.

Mississippi is the state that keeps the other red states from the bottom of the list in educational excellence. The license plate should read "Obesity, Bigotry and Ignorance".

Mississippi consistently ranks in or near the bottom in education. Do their politicians ask for better qualified teachers to come to Mississippi? No. Do they fund better education or educational infrastructure? No. Do they even provide subsidies for follow on education of the teachers who can't find better jobs outside of Mississippi? No.

Do they try to get gun makers to come to Mississippi? Yes. Why? Because gun makers make huge contributions to politicians in the states where the factories are located. More gun makers equals more money in the wallets of those same self serving politicos.

    Now I understand.

People would like to believe that these gunmakers need to move to friendlier places. The real truth is in the fact that these gun companies are wanted and their presence is accepted. OF course there were negative statements after that shocking massacre in Newtown. However, we know that those companies have been employing our friends and neighbors for a long time The people working there do not foist their opinions on us and we need to be more than willing to learn just what the mission of the companies must be.

Guns will be part of American life. The need is for responsible ownership use of these weapons. Everyone needs make sure that those who should not have these weapons are not given the opportunity to do so. WE need gun registration for all sales and owners. We need to be sure that these weapons are secure and not readily available for our children. We need to remind everyone how precious life is and that we need to live every day in a way that celebrates life.

We do not need someone from another state to tell us what he thinks should happen. I am sure those on the right will think this is a good idea. However, we have been responsible gun owners and gun manufacturers for many, many years. THe words of a few will not change that.

When are we going to start looking out for the US energy security. We should build two or three refineries in North Dakota and then build a pipe line to the east coast where people still use oil to heat there homes. The only reason they want New Orleans is so they can send this oil out of North America. We should be using this oil right here in America not shipping it all over the world. Open markets are fine when everyone is playing fair but China and many other Asian nations are not so maybe it is about time we look out for ourselves with energy.

Wow! WOW! This just goes to show you how out of touch and ignorant a certain portion of the American population is when it comes to the 'discussion' on gun control. Republicans...I'm talkin mainly to you. But I'm not siding with the 'gun abolitionists' either. That fact of the matter is something needs to be done about certain types of weapons...NOT ALL WEAPONS! Owning weapons for hunting and sport as well as personal protection is a law abiding citizen's right and especially...A privilage! No organization or government is going to deny you of this. A somewhat similar propostion was 'tried' in Canada...The Long-gun Registry. But as a 'democratic' society, we VOTED it away! So much for being 'Socialists' eh?
This is not a matter of 'red' state vs 'blue' states...it's a discussion on how to reduce the horrendous amount of killing and maiming that occurs in your country...that is all! Which...by the way...you lead the western world in! Nobody is going to come and take your guns! But it has become a bonifide sideshow of fearmongering and a total lack of reasonable thought.
I'm a gun owner, but do I need a handgun or military style weapon? Hell no! Do I think anyone else does? Ditto! My utter disbelief comes from reading and viewing the unbelievable 'us and them' division in the US that is perpertrated by the NRA and certain right leaning politicians who would have you believe that you are still living 200 years in the past. C'mon USA...get together with each other and work it out as the great 'DEMOCRACY' that you are and the model that the rest of the world has looked up to. Otherwise the hatred and bi-partisan nonsence is what will tear you apart. Listen to each other, compromise. Don't listen to the BS that the millionaires and billionaires are feeding you and turning you against each other with thier self-serving lies and distortions of facts and history. YOU ARE COLLECTIVELY SMARTER THAN THAT!

I am sure that gun makers can go elsewhere and not be threatened by the State and still create jobs.

I would try and let all the gun makers that they are open for business and let the states make up the loss where they are now.

Their loss another States gain what a bunch of crap must be union control too.

Asking for an industry that failure of quality control can result in death or sever injury to relocate to a state with a history of rejecting quality control measures is a hoot! Can Mississippi replace the skilled machinists, many of whom learned their trade in State VoTec schools in CT, with equally skilled machinists? I doubt it.

Food for thought by Abe himself Obama you should pay attention to these words you might learn something.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves....

There is going to be controversy no matter where the manufacturer is located. Mississippi isn't exactly exempt from it.
Philip Gunn's name is a fine name to lobby with, however.

Let's see, Republicans come out to support an industry that makes, produces and sells things with but one purpose- to kill. This points out the problem with the GOP- they support business over people (whether its companies that pollute, produce faulty products, or in this case guns).
Republicans- what is wrong with America.
Oh well, 6 days to the end of the GOP.
