Top Senate Republican doubts damage from defense cuts

Washington (CNN) - Anticipating possible political backlash if forced federal spending cuts kick in as expected later this week, the Senate's No. 2 Republican said Monday that he is preparing a message he plans to hit hard: The cuts are not going to have as negative an impact as the Pentagon and others in the Obama administration are saying.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said he plans to make the case to other Republicans and the public that despite warnings from the Pentagon that the mandated cuts will be devastating, the overall amount of defense spending will actually still rise.

Of course he feels it won't be that bad because for him it won't. It won't impact the big oil "Johns" he turns tricks for, in fact it will be better because it will mean they'll have less regulation and can screw the public for even more profit. And he absolutely doesn't care what happens to any military personnel or their families if they are less than the General/Admiral level people he plays golf with. And on and on!

How about closing some loopholes and subsidies for big oil companies? Watch how fast this corporate lap-dog will whine if that is proposed! Cornyn serves as the right-wing mouth piece. He couldn't be a worse Senator unless he was Ted Cruz – the other Texas Senator.

Even if the cuts to defense are made, the total cost for 2013 will go up.

Simply Amazing! After decades of covering themselves with the flag and raising the communist bogeyman, Republicans are abandoning their long standing friends in the military industrial complex. They can no longer make claim to be the party for a stronger military and safer America.

Sen. Cornyn has made many statements about the economy, etc. He definitely believes that he has the answers. So far he has not been impressive. Instead he is sticking to the very conservative policies he supports with no interest in compromise or cooperation. Right now we need people to work together to get us past another fiscal crisis.

  8. GOP = Greed Over People

Ah, another member of the GOP calling on his deep, personal, knowledge of how the military complex works, due to his extensive service history, and how we should be assured all will be fine.

Oh, wait, is that is John Cornyn the same senator from the great con country of the United State of Texas, that has NEVER served a day in any branch of the service?

The same John Cornyn that somehow managed to get a student "deferment" in 1970 when the lottery drawing was introduced and his number was 28. Which jives with my old memory in which my draft board informed me, I was lucky, as 1969 my freshman year, was the last year of student deferments that were good for 4 years if you maintained a 2.0 overall grade point average. Anyone with a number in the first 100 were certain to ship out to Viet Nam(May 11th was 353 that year), No new deferments were supposed to be issued, as that was the entire point of the new lottery system.

Of course, those were just the rules for us common folk.

So, once again, do we have an old, white GOP male pontificating about something he knows nothing about?

In other words, another old man that voted to start wars, in which your kids would die.

    Typical republican.

  9. Former Republican, now an Independent

Cornyn, like all other republicans are trying to soften the blow of the crisis they manufactured and are fully responsible for.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney had already made it clear that Obama is dead wrong. If only it's not too late for the Pentagon saying that the mandated cuts will be devastating, the overall amount of defense spending will actually still rise.

Cornyn's extensive military service (none) makes him SO QUALIFIED to evaluate the sequester's impact on readiness! He would sell his soul to promote an extremist agenda of white, fundamental Christian, corporate fascism. He exemplifies the career right-wing politician in Texas. Crooked as a dogs hind leg and stump-broke for every oilman with a fistfull of money and a gleam in his eye. He and Ted Cruz will drag Texas below Mississippi as the fattest, dumbest, and most bigoted state.
