A top GOP prospect in key Senate showdown says no to running
(CNN) - One of the two Republican congressmen considering a 2014 bid for an open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa says he is staying put in the House.
Rep. Tom Latham announced Wednesday that he will not campaign for the seat of longtime Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, who late last month announced that he wouldn't run in 2014 for a sixth term in office.

'Larger than life' civil rights icon honored with statue in Capitol
Washington (CNN) - Had it not been for Rosa Parks and others of her era, President Barack Obama said he wouldn't be unveiling a bronze statue of the civil rights icon in the U.S. Capitol.
"We can do no greater honor ... than to carry forward her principle of courage born of conviction," Obama said at a ceremony on Wednesday.

Spending cuts mean Congress is grounded from military planes
(CNN) - Members of Congress will not be allowed to travel by military aircraft once the forced spending cuts set to take effect on Friday kick in, House Speaker John Boehner told Republican members at a meeting Wednesday afternoon.
The prohibition could ground some official congressional delegation trips – known as CODELs – where several members or a committee travel on fact-finding or relationship-building trips to foreign countries. Transportation for these trips is sometimes provided by military aircraft, while sometimes members travel by commercial air. It was not immediately clear if the restriction would cancel any planned trips.

Immigration detainee release under fire
(CNN) - At first, Miguel Hernandez thought it was a mistake, or worse, a joke. The 19-year-old had been pulled over for failure to use his blinker, but the fact that he is an undocumented immigrant landed him in a detention center in rural Georgia. Hernandez was certain that deportation proceedings would follow soon, and was mulling over it when a guard brought some news: he was being released.
The package of forced budget cuts, known as sequestration, will mean $85 billion of government-wide cuts. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) decision to move detainees to less costly supervision options was met with backlash from Republicans who accuse the Obama administration of using scare tactics to win a political battle.

Bloomberg: Illinois congressional win shows NRA's waning power
(CNN) - The powerful National Rifle Association lobby should see Tuesday's outcome in a congressional election as a sign that their influence is declining, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, predicting future wins for pro-gun control candidates would require less than the $2 million he injected into this race.
"I think it's a harbinger of what is going to happen here," Bloomberg said in an interview to air Wednesday on CNN's "The Situation Room."

Ben Carson to speak at CPAC
(CNN) - Dr. Benjamin Carson, who made headlines for making political statements during his keynote address at the National Prayer Breakfast, will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
"Dr. Ben Carson represents the optimism and hope of the future of the conservative movement, while at the same time he articulates the deep fiscal and social challenges that our nation faces," said Al Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union, the group that sponsors the annual gathering.

Congressional leaders invited to W.H. on spending cuts deadline day
(CNN) - Congressional leaders have been invited to the White House for a meeting at 10 a.m. ET Friday–the day forced spending cuts are scheduled to start taking effect, two sources said Wednesday.
But while President Barack Obama was on Capitol Hill Wednesday for a Rosa Parks statue unveiling, he met with congressional leaders for a brief, minute-long meeting.
