(CNN) - Gabrielle Giffords, a former congresswoman shot and wounded more than two years ago, urged support for background checks on Wednesday.
She and her husband, Mark Kelly, spoke at a gun control rally in Tucson, Arizona, the same place where an assailant shot her in the head.

It must have been an emotionally tough moment to go back to that same location. Let's hope that we can pass some sensible gun control laws, and particularly some "gun owner responsibility laws".
There are those who say that background checks would not have stopped the Tucson shooting. Unfortunately, under current Arizona law, I understand that they would be correct. This is why we need the reforms, especially on the mental health issue.
Back ground checks would be discrimination against black since more than 50% of them wouldn't pass
We the people hope back ground check work, because people is still getting their hands on guns, an still kiling an shooting people.
FIRST pass laws repealing the healthcare privacy statutes for the mentally ill, people on drugs, depressed people, people with anxiety, etc. What good are background checks when all the crazy people in this country aren't going to register with the government? They need to give up their privacy for the good of the commune.
Thank you Gabby and Mark
I am so glad that Gabby is doing so well. Unfortunately her words will fall on deaf ears. The NRA will spend inordinate amounts of time and money to make sure that her message is not received or any of her ideas enforced.
so when will all psychiatrists be required to report all their patients to the government so a database of crazy people can created? we hve do not fly lists for airlines. we need a do not buy list of crazy people to deny them a gun.

The Republicans led the NRA charge to put those laws on the books under Reagan. The statutes are written specifically to protect gun/ammo purchasers and gun owners.
Here's the way I want to see the background checks conducted:
Are you an active member of the armed forces or law enforcement? No? Then you don't need a gun. Bye bye. NEXT!

How about members of the KKK? Ask around to your family members and report back to us.
The paranoids of this country will never allow ANY sensible legislation. Luckily we still have more sane than paranoids who do not worry about black helicopters. Pretty funny stuff when you think about it. On second thought, just plain embarassing. Always nice to see Gabby and to observe her daily struggle caused by another paranoid nutjob. The Bush Administration did way too well with the fear mongering.
As a gun owner I strongly support background checks and legislation to prevent straw buyers. However, I am worried that the existing gun laws are not being enforced. Especially so regarding felons who are caught with firearms.
