Republicans see shift in party ahead of same-sex marriage arguments

(CNN) – Republicans on Sunday described cracks appearing in their party's long-held opposition to same-sex marriage, an issue set to gain renewed attention when the Supreme Court hears arguments on its legality this week.

"There is no putting this genie back in the bottle. It is undeniable. The shift is here and we're not going back." Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ana Navarro told CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley on "State of the Union."

Bloomberg hasn’t given up on assault weapons ban

(CNN) – A national ban on assault weapons may have met all-but-certain death in the Senate this week, but one of the measure’s proponents – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg – said Sunday his fight wasn’t over.

“I don't think there's ever been an issue where the public has spoken so clearly, where Congress hasn't eventually understood and done the right thing,” Bloomberg said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Colorado governor entangled in 'nightmare' gun case

(CNN) – Colorado's governor, who this week signed some of the nation's tightest gun control measures into law, said Sunday he couldn't fathom why the son of one of his close friends would decide to shoot his state's prisons chief - also a friend - to death.

"I felt like I was caught in a nightmare I couldn't wake up from. All these things were happening to people that I loved. And they didn't seem to be connected in any way," Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, said on CNN's "State of the Union." He added his own security was being bolstered in the aftermath of the crime.

Rand Paul has some ideas for Republicans

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, said Sunday he doesn't think the United States fits into a left-right paradigm - and he has some ideas on how to make the Republican Party more appealing to voters.

"I think the Republican Party needs to find out how to be bigger, and I think I do bring some ideas to that. So I've talked to the Republican National Committee, the Republican National Committee chairman about things I think we need to do to be competitive," Paul said on "Fox News Sunday."

Kerry presses Iraq to ban Iran’s shipments to Syria

(CNN) – Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday in Baghdad that he had pressed Iraq's leaders to take steps prohibiting Iranian planes from delivering arms to Syria's besieged government, which is battling rebels backed by financial support from the United States.

Iranian planes must fly through Iraq's airspace in order to reach Syria with deliveries of weapons and supplies. The flights are occurring almost daily, according to a senior State Department official accompanying Kerry on his stop in Baghdad.

Veterans Affairs boss: 'No veteran should have to wait for claims'

(CNN) – The mountain of benefits claims at the Department of Veterans Affairs is a result of an outdated paper process and new levels of complexity in returning troops' cases, the agency's boss said in an interview Sunday.

"No veteran should have to wait for claims. If there's anybody impatient here, I am that individual, and we're pushing hard," Gen. Eric Shinseki, the secretary of veterans affairs, said on CNN's "State of the Union."
