Arkansas governor rejects voter ID measure

(CNN) - A bill that would have required voters in Arkansas to produce photo identification before being allowed a ballot was rejected on Monday by the state's Democratic governor, who said the measure was too expensive and could disenfranchise legal voters.

Gov. Mike Beebe wrote that he thought the bill "unnecessarily restricts and impairs our citizens' right to vote," adding the implementation costs would have risen to $300,000.

It would be a good idea to have a funded program to make it free to have a photo ID card .

They have one in India , helps stop voter fraud . Makes taking a senses less costly. And it will be of use with any future immigration law.

This is Republican "Big Government" adding to the voting process under the guise of "solving a voter fraud problem" that HAS NEVER existed. While the additional cost is not huge, there is no problem and therefore the GOP state legislation shouldn`t be pushing their pet projects.

Let this be a "teachable moment" for politicians AND journalists alike. ALWAYS include the additional cost as part of the story for any change in policy. Wars, no fly zones, Hurricaine relief [for those mostly red states that recieve the money].

Now I don't see why a person would have a problem providing a photo ID to prove they are a resident to vote there. If you don't check and make sure they are a citizen any illegal can vote there.

How can conservatives, with any credibility, insist on unrestricted second amendment rights out of one side of their mouths and then push or pass the voter ID measures that deprive people of their right to vote? Kuddos to the governor for saying no.

democrats have no intention of ever protecting the integrity of our elections by protecting them from illegal voting activity. and how does asking somebody for an ID before voting cost anything? or is that money for the incarceration of all the illegal voters?

No, no, don't you know you're supposed to waste piles of cash for idiotic 'solutions' to a made up problem and then crow about how patriotic you are for saving the world fron inevitable imaginary dooooom?

Obviously not a republicon if he doesn't understand that simple basic rule.

Finally some common sense in Arkansas. There is so much to be done. There are so many people, desperately, in need. The Gov. will find a more productive use for the 300,000. In Texas, they want to do the same, waste our hard earned, tax money, even tho it was proven that only 3 cases were found in one year , two were dropped and only one case prosecuted. Is it really worth a million to implement ? Everything about the GOP lacks common sense.
