Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Love how the morally uncoothe are going to preach morals. Stick to lousy comedy and funny face making. Work on your next unsuccesful marriage and leve law making to the elected comedians and the BORN CITIZENS of the United States.

Look at you hypocrites in the comments. Here you are, bashing Jim Carey for being a comedian making jokes about current events. Oh no, this is highly unacceptable. Bet you find Daniel Tosh and other comedians like him funny as heck though!

@May, Rosemary and all the gun advocates on this page and in America...

If some of the regulations sought after here in question was to down the road, avert another tragedy and was to actually result in sparing one of your love ones from being another statistic, then tell the regulation in question a bad thing or a good thing?????????????????

And where do you think these "punks" got their guns from???? Oh that's right – THE GOOD OLD U.S.A.

"Canadian Carrey Dumps on the 2nd Amendment

My father was murdered by a couple Canadian punks let out of Canadian prison early. They brought guns to wyoming from Canada and killed my father. They didn't seem care about Canadian gun laws or any other laws . . . so Jim get your head out of you rear and get out of hollywood before it eats your soul.

By the way, Charlton Heston was right and you're just a liberal hollywood idiot. Gun laws just keep guns out of law abiding citizens' hands, not the criminals.

Carrey is creative but his humor is pre-pubescent. This time, his 10-14 year old fan base, won't get it.

Well folks, here we go again. I am a Canadian and i do not agree with or support Jim Carrey and his opinion. I am ashamed of him and his statements. I apologize to all Americans on behalf of Carrey as he is too dense to do it himself. I used to be a fan but, no more. He is washed up and grasping for attention. How unfortunate he has decided to go after an American icon. Heston was more than a single statement as Carrey would have you believe. Charlton Heston was one hell of an actor and a great spokesperson for civil rights. He should be treated with the respect he deserves. Again, as a Canadian, I profoundly apologize to the American public for a foolish and unhinged assault on one of your great legends. Sorry...

Heston was just an actor playing peaceful roles like the Bible, The Ten Commandments, and underneath it all he was just a violent selfish man ready for war.

You think YOU hate Charlton Heston??? Tell me about it, Sonny. 70% of the American People have a "High School Diploma" or LESS. And if you've been to a Public School lately, you know what a joke THAT is. Everything you need to know about 'Murrica is right here in the comments section. G-d would drown the lot of you if there was a sewer big enough...

What a sad commentary when a washed up, coked up, Hollywood Liberal has to mock the dead to get a laugh and some media exposure. Bet this piece of trash got big yucks from Uncle Joe Biden and Diane Feinstein.

Can CNN write one article that doesn't troll on emotions? Just one.... No, this isn't a big deal and who cares....everything is not an outrage or a calling to get emotional.

The gun grab has nothing to do with safety. It does have everything to do with government control. The government must dissarm the people before it confiscates wealth to keep the beast spending going. If people have guns, they will fight. So ramp up gun laws hyped by purported safety benefits, demonize all gun owners, like Jim is doing, make it feel good to strip rights away....and then roll out DHS....have you seen this has become the Federal Police and it doesn't even respond to congress? Its a private army...wake up people. It is happening right in front of you. I know – call me a crazy and nothing I say matters. But when you see one of the thousands of DHS armored vehicles, tanks, heavy weapons, hollow points, kevlar, drones....with no in your neighborhood...make sure you pat yourself on the back for being 'enlightened'.

Reality check for Blah Blah: "Waiting periods are only a step. Registration is only a step. The prohibition of private firearms is the goal." stated by Janet Reno. Enjoy the delusion.

Heston died an old man. He lost sight of things just like many from the older generation. It happens.

His movies were great for the time though.

Stop getting offended. Heston was a stubbord meathead in his older years.

Interesting how all these people from other countries (Piers Morgan, Carey) are so critical of America.
Carey is a "has been" with lots of money.
Through his own admissions he had to get mental help some time ago; good for him.
But he has gone too far here. This will ONLY encourage people to buy more guns.

Thanks Jim ! BIG help to the gun cause.
