Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Maybe we need 1st Amendment control as well. Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy ki||ed more kids with their anti-vaccine rants than Lanza did with his gun. After all, wasn't the 1st Amendment written when free press meant hand-cranked printers and passing out pamphlets in the street? The founding fathers never envisioned one foo| having the ability to spew uncontrolled nonsense to millions of people at once, so why isn't Carrey ranting about that?

Why are rates of gun related violence so different between Canada and the US?
If it's not about gun control, then what explains the discrepancy?
Are there more mentally ill people in the US?

I think it's funny all of the people yelling freedom and liberty while at the same time trying to silence another American. You might not like what he say, but he's a comedian. It's a joke. Like Eastwood did to Obama. I don't understand the fascism in this country. If you don't have the same opinion as me, leave? Really? Before you tell anyone to move back anywhere maybe you should learn a thing or two about our country. Also I like how no Ar-15s turns into gun ban. Stop acting like children

Another actor who confuses fame with importance; Carry has NEVER been relevant in politics or in life. Carry has no moral center either, the moment he became successful, he left his wife to find a new "Hollywood" wife. Carry USE to be funny, but now it old rehash of his stale routine, not at the level he was during his "Living Color" days. Note to other actors/singers and misc performers, your UNINFORMED OPINION is worth no more and no less than anyone else UNIFORMED OPINION; so unless you can bring some unique insight into these sorts of issues, just keep your opinions to yourself.

Ace Ventura vs. The Ten Commandments. Mask vs. Ben Hur. Notice a trend here ? One guy ,talented, intelligent, articulate, champion of free mens rights. The other guy, a silly facemaking clown. Totally opposite ends of the spectrum.

Mr. Carrey is well with in his rights under the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution to practice his freedom of speech.

However, it is unfortunate that he does not equally respect the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution.

I do not believe the Bill of Rights was meant to be a menu to pick and chose those you like, and ignore those you don't.

What Mr. Carrey, and other "anti-gun" media/politicians/news/actors can not change or refute is that the vast overwhelming majority of firearm owners are law abiding, tax paying citizens that own and use their firearms in safe, responsible, and legal manors.

This is a stupid, inflammatory title for this article. "Jim Carrey mocks dead actor." It's shameless sensationalism to get people to click on the link. "Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston in comedy sketch" would have been just fine.

Well, I guess Jim has made enough money that he is not concerned about his career anymore. If I were a producer concerned with box office revenue, I would not be hiring Mr. Carrey for any projects. Why? Ask Jane Fonda about what influence her strongly held ideological motivated statements made early on in her career might have curtailed her opportunities, although she did quite well, she may have done considerably better if she would have kept her profile low and her mouth shut. When the country is divided about 50/50 politically, as they are on most major issues, then Hollywood Types should have enough intellect to understand that no matter which side of the issue they are on, if they come out stongly/publicly they risk robbing their backers of 1/2 of their potential audience, and therefore may cause the project to be a financial failure. Not a risk I would be willing to take, if I were making a Jim Carrey Movie. But on the other hand, go ahead on her man! It's always interesting to watch WWII movies and the high arcing flight path of Kamakazi Pilots/Planes when hit by AA fire, and then plunge into the sea. Sort of a pre-determined outcome when you see the smoke coming out of the plan, then watching it's final descent.

I am for gun control to a large extent but I never liked Jim Carrey – personally, I think he's a bit psychotic and over the top. So he's not my hero in this dogfight just because he's on my side. I guess you gun nuts don't get that because you would probably hate Ted Nugent under normal circumstances. But since he is your mouthpiece, regardless of how creepy and wigged out he is, he is definitely your idol. Real respectable pillar of society.

    Go back to Canada, Jim.

You spent your entire life shielded by our military and our nuclear umbrella.

Your first wife wonders where you went...

Leave my guns alone. Bad guys will make or smuggle more in anyway. (Drugs are already illegal and still easy to get).

Remember, US population is much greater than in your Canadian arctic tundra. Now, why don't you head on back there, and leave our AMERICAN liberties (and our quality American actors, like Heston) alone.

Scratch off one male fan. (Only ~150 left).

Well one thing is for sure. Carrey's career was dead WAY before they had to pry the gun out of Heston's hands!

Carrey is a hypocrite w bodyguards and armed security at every event. Heston marched w MLK Jr, championed liberty overall for many causes. What has Carrey ever done? Nothing...

    Commie and Commier,

Another overpaid, rich, Hollywood, liberal, third rate actor that couldnt hold water for the the great actor and icon Charlton Heston. Jim "Commie" Carrey is one of the most overpaid actors in the history of Hollywood and anyone who spends a dime to see any of his films is nuts.

Jim Carry could only hope to be half the MAN and ACTOR that Charlton Heston was.....
Jim Carry doesn't care about gun rights or the people that are involved. He just want the publicity because he's a has been want to be actor..
