Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are pretty good. I gather Abe doesn't watch a lot of movies.

  5. Gun Control Doublethinkers

People who demand "gun control" and blame the actions of people on the tools those people use, well, those people are simply too dumb to breathe.

These flat out nitwits want to ban weapons that account for at best maybe one half of one percent of gun violence. They just want to have politicians "do something" – something that is entirely symbolic and ineffective.

Why is that? Because ironically, despite being engaged in double think, these people cannot actually think.

As for Jim Carrey, mocking the dead shows him to be flat out scum.

What do you expect from a Canadian. Why not worry about Canada problems first. Make sure your house is in order before attacking someone elses house.

Jim Carey is only for those people not smart enough to know that his only skit is that of fire marshall bill. That same facial expressions and tones. He is a bore and not funny.

Do not mock the dead – they cannot defend themselves. Be a man Carrey. I grew up on Charlton Heaston - you can forget Omega Man or Soylent Green.

Damn shame he wasn't mocked while alive. His ego, if given solid form would have dwarfed the universe as we know it.

There's a reason Jim Carrey is still irrelevant... He hasn't been relevant since 'Dumb & Dumber'. Then again, the irony in the movie title is quite revealing of his acting career and this little jig he just put together, respectively. Stay in Canada and kiss the ground your queen walks on, Jim.

Charlton Heston, stunk as an actor. He also stunk as a human being. He was filled with Charlton, and Charlton only.

Don't worry Mr. Carrey, they have a special place in Hell reserved just you and your gun hating, foul mouthed antics...

People kill people, the guns are just a tool. Unfortunately you cannot regulate what stupid people do with guns so you must regulate the guns to make it harder for stupid people to get their hands on one. If you cannot understand that then you are one of the stupid people who should not have a gun.

Heston is almost as dead as Carey's career. Every court jester secretly wants to be the judge

I've heard about Charlton Heston. I've seen Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, and Greatest Show on Earth. I've seen pictures of Mr. Heston marching with MLK.

No idea who Jim Carey is. Something tells me no one else will know either in another fifty years.

Guns are just like our borders, no reason to add new laws when we don't properly enforce the ones that already exist.

fatwomansquest: I saw those movies. I loved Omega Man, but it really is not a classic. Soylent Green, well that is a classic, but not really because of Heston.

Yeah, Carrey, have fun. But Heston was a bigger actor in his day than you'll ever be. And most thinking people know ti doesn't take much of an intellect to poke fun at a guy who can't fight back.

It amazes me how hypocritical and sheeplike Hollywood is. Gun control is the "cool" cause of the day, so they're for it. Talk to them about cutting down the use of those same guns in the TV shows and movies and video games that pay their outrageous salaries and they'll shriek "Freedom of Speech" at the tops of their lungs.

Is Jim Carrey still alive ?
I'm trying to remember back to the days when he was relevant but its so long ago.
Hes sunk so low that hes insulting dead people to try to bring attention back on his failing career.
