Jim Carrey mocks Charlton Heston

(CNN) – Charlton Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" provides the punch line for comedian Jim Carrey's new video mocking the late actor and NRA president.

Carrey, who appears on a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw" both as Heston and as the frontman of a country-western band "Lonesome Earl And The Clutterbusters," is a vocal proponent of stricter gun control laws.

"Charlton Heston movies are no longer in demand, and his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, because they couldn't pry the gun from his cold dead hand," Carrey sings in the video, which was posted Monday on the comedy website Funny or Die.

Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

He famously used the line mocked in Carrey's video during a 2000 speech to NRA members, going specifically after then-Vice President Al Gore, who was running for president at the time.

"As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: 'From my cold, dead hands!" Heston declared.

Carrey starred in movies like "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" and "The Mask." He actively argues his case for gun control on Twitter @JimCarrey.

Carrey said in a statement that he found America's rash of gun violence "frustrating" and the video was "my fun little way of expressing that frustration."

Odd comments here from so many who mock "those Hollywood types". There are few who epitomized the
Hollywood types like Charlton Heston did. Used his "celebrity" for his own causes. Remember folks, he just
played the part of Christian characters, he was not actually any of those people.
Just a man, with a gun, and now he is gone.

Thank you Jim for mocking Heston. He may have been a great actor, but he was an ignorant old man that had no clue on gun control. Hope the worms are eating his body.

At least unlike many other stars, Carey doesn't try to have it both ways – being in movies which glorify violence while condemning it. Keep it up Jim, you've kept me laughing since In Living Color.

Jim Carey is a joke. What has he ever done for this country other than Dumb and Dumber which seems to be spreading like wildfire thru the Democratic party. It's good he lives in a state where they have the Terminator to protect them. He should go back to his country where they have an army, they just didn't give them guns...

Heston is a maggot, lowest common denominator of human waste. It brings a smile on my face that perhaps he is fodder for larva....

Any idiot (Carrey) who would take a pass on being blinded by Lauren Holly's headlights, is clearly a fool and of no intelligence. Dumb and Dumber: a case where life imitates art, Jimmey.

Lol yeah like that's not an incendiary headline or anything. Why not "Jim Carrey advocates Gun Control in online skit"?

Well, Carrey. Do you live in lower/middle income area that has its share of violence? No. You are farting through silk.

Until we all have gigantic doors with lavish alarm systems, I'd like to own a gun.

It's unfortunate that with our freedoms comes the responsibility not to abuse those freedoms as not everyone wants to live within the boundries of a civilized society. Because there are numerous Americans that simply take everything to the max and beyond, other Americans feel the need to put limits on those freedoms. Because I have a right to purchase a weapon doesn't mean I have the right to purchase any weapon (i.e. grenade launcher) that's out there, there are limits and there should be limits. All the killings and shootings by people using guns against other people including the latest in Mississippi and Colorado should indicate to any reasonable person that the time has come to place restrictions on certain weapons and access to those weapons. It in itself is not an "end all to be all" but it is a step in the direction of making our society safer for all Americans.

Freedom of speech anyone? Jim Carrey is allowed to say what he wants to say. And for the people complaining that he can't comment on America because he is from Canada? Why? Seems that a lot of those same people are expressing their opinions of Canada or Canadians in general, but in their own words shouldn't they be shutting up because they are not from Canada or any other country they choose to regularly comment on? That's like saying you are not allowed to comment on pro-sports if you've never been a pro athlete. Talk about censorship.

How dare Jim Carey disrespect the dead?! That's the job of the NRA to do with their post-Newtown action!

I'm so sick of this entire gun debate. I truly am. My heart goes out to all of the people whose lives were lost in the past year. Anything anyone suggests is shot down (all the pun intended) immediately by the RWNJ's. I know what I'm about to say isn't going to garner me any friends, but I could care less, let's see if this gets posted.....

Let's do absolutely nothing about the gun violence. After all the gun nuts are constantly screaming Obama is taking their guns and giving them to the criminals/thugs. When the next Sandy Hook type shooting occurs, the perpetrator will not look like your typical "thug". Remember that.

    Remember Sandy Hook....

I find it funny here that people say that Carrey, or other Hollywood celebrities should keep their opinions themselves while they miss the obvious that Charlton Heston was a Hollywood celebrity who didn't keep his opinions to himself.

Wayne Lapierre could star in a new movie "Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest" as the third character. Lapierre is a real toad!
