Rush Limbaugh concedes conservatives 'lost' marriage debate

(CNN) – Conservatives who oppose same-sex marriage must accept that they’ve “lost the issue,” radio host Rush Limbaugh argued Thursday.

“This issue is lost,” the conservative firebrand said. “I don't care what the Supreme Court does, this is now inevitable - and it's inevitable because we lost the language on this. “

Limbaugh went on to assert conservatives “lost the issue when we started allowing the word ‘marriage’ to be bastardized and redefined by simply adding words to it.”

“Marriage is one thing, and it was not established on the basis of discrimination,” he continued. “It wasn't established on the basis of denying people anything. ‘Marriage’ is not a tradition that a bunch of people concocted to be mean to other people with. But we allowed the left to have people believe that it was structured that way. “

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the legality of same-sex marriage earlier this week.

Another notable conservative, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, said on Tuesday that same-sex marriage advocates have a more convincing argument than opponents, who do nothing but rehash scripture to make their point.

"The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals," O'Reilly said Tuesday on Fox. "That's where the compelling argument is. 'We're Americans. We just want to be treated like everybody else.' That's a compelling argument, and to deny that, you have got to have a very strong argument on the other side. The argument on the other side hasn't been able to do anything but thump the Bible."

O'Reilly has previously stated he takes a libertarian view on the issue, and repeated Tuesday night that it's a decision that should be left up to the states. "I support civil unions. I always have. The gay marriage thing, I don't feel that strongly about it one way or another."

If they get the right to marry, it's still "Gay marriage", not "marriage".
There's no need to get hung up on words. The two terms are two different things, and I think everybody realizes that, no matter what they say. It doesn't affect my man-woman marriage in any way.

DOMA should be stricken for the fact that it tells states to not recognize a certain contract from another state, while recognizing all others. How it has not been stricken before is beyond me, but if it gets knocked down now, then there is hope for Obamacare to share the same fate.

I get tired of the statement that marriage should be left to the states. What the hell is that? Should freedom be left to the states? Should discrimination be left to the states? What the hell happens when people go to file their income taxes, a federal issue? They have to declare their marital status!! Are you married and filing jointly according to the state you live in? That's just stupid. This should be a uniform issue across the country. Either you're married, in all states, or you're not. It can't be a half-ass answer.

Good point Rush. Sadly your opponents on this blog can only resort to ad hominem attacks. Predictable.

My thoughts on this subject are that gay people want to get together and they want the same rights, such as spousal benefits, as married people have. But, you don't call it a marriage; you call it a union. Plain and simple. I'm not religious, but I do not think you should tamper with the word marriage. Marriage has always been the union of a man and a woman. With gay people, you simply call it a union. I'm sorry to include this but, what could happen next is a guy who is very fond of his pet poodle wants to get married to it. What would stand in the way if we keep bending the rules as they exist now.
Just my thoughts. Leave the word marriage out of the equation. It's a union, plain and simple. I think the Supreme Court is going to agree.

    Nothing new here...

...conservatives have been losing every issue, one at a time, in the last 60 years...

...thats is because, like dinosaurs, if you dont change with time, you will die out...

    ...and good riddance to GOP

Don't argue with Rush about marriage. He has been married 4 times and that makes him a SME on the subject.

I guess that we know who the Christians in this country are versus those who say they are but deny God's position on things.

Rush doesn't care about gay marriage, he's only interested in defending his $400 million empire.

“This issue is lost,” the conservative firebrand said. “I don't care what the Supreme Court does, this is now inevitable – and it's inevitable because we lost the language on this. “ - because they lost the language on this !!!??? So typical of the whole republican conservative brand... it's never that they're wrong, they just are having problems with how people are interpreting their messaging. Jeez... I sure hope the public votes them all out of control in the state houses soon before what's left of them trashes the country, robbing from our children's future by refusing to invest in job creation programs and caring more about fetus's than living children they don't want to help feed or educate.

Now that conservatives are conceding on the social issues, they will find that they have no argument except for the protection of wealth. Social issues were always just a smokescreen for that anyway.

Rush makes $80 million a year from Clear Channels (which Bain bought a very large chunk of 6 years ago) to spread the conservative gospel. Romney lost, gun nuts are losing, in a word Republicans are losing. Meanwhile hundreds of hardworking Americans lost their jobs in radio to feed this pig, good job Bain. When you forget that the United States was formed to be By the People and For the People, you should lose. It is NOT just for fat rich white guys.

Marriage (also called matrimony or wedlock) is a social union or legal contract between people called spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the spouses, There is a civil union marriage and a religious marriage. Many people act like it is a scared word with meaning, but straight couples, not all but 50% of them have no regard for its meaning or think it is scared, look at the rate of divorce among straight couples. Rush has no room to talk about marriage and it's meaning.. Maybe we all need to get off the high and mighty horse

"‘Marriage’ is not a tradition that a bunch of people concocted to be mean to other people with." Indeed, "marriage" is not, but the "marriage license" is. US and state governments got involved in marriage first to prevent blacks and whites from intermarrying, later for various tax-related reasons. The solution is for government to get out, but conservatives strangely want to keep marriage an affair of government instead of church. You made your bed, now lie in it.
