Rush Limbaugh concedes conservatives 'lost' marriage debate

(CNN) – Conservatives who oppose same-sex marriage must accept that they’ve “lost the issue,” radio host Rush Limbaugh argued Thursday.

“This issue is lost,” the conservative firebrand said. “I don't care what the Supreme Court does, this is now inevitable - and it's inevitable because we lost the language on this. “

Limbaugh went on to assert conservatives “lost the issue when we started allowing the word ‘marriage’ to be bastardized and redefined by simply adding words to it.”

“Marriage is one thing, and it was not established on the basis of discrimination,” he continued. “It wasn't established on the basis of denying people anything. ‘Marriage’ is not a tradition that a bunch of people concocted to be mean to other people with. But we allowed the left to have people believe that it was structured that way. “

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the legality of same-sex marriage earlier this week.

Another notable conservative, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, said on Tuesday that same-sex marriage advocates have a more convincing argument than opponents, who do nothing but rehash scripture to make their point.

"The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals," O'Reilly said Tuesday on Fox. "That's where the compelling argument is. 'We're Americans. We just want to be treated like everybody else.' That's a compelling argument, and to deny that, you have got to have a very strong argument on the other side. The argument on the other side hasn't been able to do anything but thump the Bible."

O'Reilly has previously stated he takes a libertarian view on the issue, and repeated Tuesday night that it's a decision that should be left up to the states. "I support civil unions. I always have. The gay marriage thing, I don't feel that strongly about it one way or another."

BSmith: "Ok it has gotten to the point of stupidity. This comes down to a WORD one simple WORD."

Two points. First, if a person considers themselves a Christian, as may LGBT people do, and their Church recognizes them as Christians, then why should they not be allowed to have access to the word "marriage"? Why create a new word and force them to use that? Why the distinction? The only reason you would want this is if you are prejudiced against them. However, your prejudices should not affect other people's rights.

Second point. If the word "marriage" is to be defined by the Church, then DOMA needs to be struck down as it is a clear violation of the separation of Church and State because the federal government is making decisions that the Church should be making. Personally, I see "marriage" as a legal contract and therefore it should not be defined by the Church.

However, I still feel both DOMA and Proposition 8 are unconsti tutional as both allow a majority group decide civil rights issues for a minority group. Therefore, I fully expect DOMA, at the very least, to be struck down by the SCOTUS.

Rush Limbaugh pontificating on marriage? He should stick to diet advice and getting Viagra under a fake name (to protect his privacy according to his defense attorney).

I still see a bunch of posts here from Bible-thumpers, saying gay marriage is wrong because the Bible says it's so. You just don't get it. Why should the rest of us be forced to subscribe to YOUR (misguided, narrow) interpretation of YOUR Holy book? How would you feel if Muslims tried to force Sharia law down your throats? It's simple: If you don't believe it's OK to marry someone of your own gender, then don't marry someone of your gender. Nobody is forcing you into a gay marriage. And if your straight marriage is so threatened by someone else's gay marriage, then I say you should worry about yours.

Limbaugh and the GOP are both painfully out of touch and irrelevant.

It was never an issue about the language used to describe a legally binding contract between two consenting adults.

Ok, here is a challenge to opponents and proponents of the legalization of gay marriage. Let us make gay marriage legal for 10 years. If after those 10 years there are more divorces of gay marriages than straight marriages, then gay marriage will once again become illegal. However, if the opposite is true, then straight marriages become illegal and only gay marriages are recognized by the federal government.

This, I guarantee, would drastically cut down on the number or straight divorces, which would at least solve one problem.

Words are not harmless. Calling marriage a civil union is no different than having bathrooms for whites and bathrooms for blacks. Schools for whites and schools for blacks. Restaurants for whites and restaurants for blacks. Water fountains for whites and water fountains for blacks.
Remember when the theme of seperate but equal was offered as a solution?

Marriage is a belief brought into law which happened, now it should be changed to Union. Union being a legal contract between consenting adults. Yes that means more than Two! If you are going to allow a Union to happen and it to be a contract without religious attachments then we throw out all the other attachments!
If we are going to allow something that was a religiously brought about concept and there is a separation of Church and State then throw it all out and start with something new. A Union, it would take in all Unions both Marriage Type and Civil Union Types – do it once do it all.

Here's someone who has been married, what is it, (3) times? Nothing more than a mere "Radio Personality" to boot. Being a Lesbian I find Rush, (which seems to of been the state of MIND he lQQked for in OXY so often LOL), yet another weak persona who has his own demons to wage war on. Rush, ( I love the name, gotta say) needs to continue his own therapy to ive a pure and unwordly existence on this Earth before he tries to examine the ways of others. Thanks Rush, but okay here working full-time; paying my taxes and living the life I feel is just fine. (Pass the collection plate).

Rush Limbaugh, who has been married at least three times, has no business discussing marriage of any kind. He
should keep his big, vicious, disgusting mouth shut. Why there are so many idiots who hang on this jerk's every word
is beyond me. The only possible reason is TOTAL STUPIDITY.

Yet again they blame losing the debate on their arguing techniques. Here's a news flash, the majority hates your position, not how you explain it to us.

Limbaugh is the coal mining parrot of conservative politics. When he concedes, the issue is truly dead.

The Right may have its issues but so does the far Left and if the Right is going to treat everybody equally and protect civil liberties its time to give them another chance.

Really, does it matter what Limbaugh thinks about this topic. Good thing that Jesus provided the church with the Bible so that those that follow and believe in the Bible know what is and is not accepted, but then again today everything is supposed to be accepted, and if you don't accept you're either racist or a hater. The letter of the Bible does not hate or discriminate.

It's a shame that some folk take Limbaughs' retoric as gospel. He is nothing more then an entertainer that uses hate, lies and misinformation to ratchet up feelings. Sometimes these feelings that he has helped to exploit for his bank account has helped weak minded people to go over the edge and commit crimes. Oh you say where is the proof. Look around at the level of hate that he and others have created over the last few years and think how that effects certain folk. there is your answer. you see it on the news and hear it on the airwaves daily. Hate,Hate. This pushed some into a new way of hating and feeling that they need to release that hate. And it continues.

Rush, we can't take you seriously for your marriages were just a temporary relationship. But seriously, even the musical Fiddler on the Roof showed that the views of marriage have changed and evolved over thousands of years. We, today, are just getting more realistic.
