Bachmann headed to funeral for 'Iron Lady'

(CNN) – Rep. Michele Bachmann will travel to London as part of the U.S. congressional delegation at Wednesday's funeral for the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Other American lawmakers making the trip include Rep. George Holding, R-North Carolina, and delegation leader Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee.

"Margaret Thatcher was one of the greatest champions freedom has ever known, and her funeral gives Americans and friends around the world an opportunity to pay final respects," House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement.

He also noted the officials would travel to Britain on commercial air flights – a requirement Boehner set forth for congressional trips when mandatory spending cuts took effect in March.

All former U.S. presidents and first ladies, along with President Barack Obama and wife Michelle, were invited to Thatcher's funeral, though Obama's official schedule has him remaining in Washington on Wednesday.

Nancy Reagan, the widow of staunch Thatcher ally and friend President Ronald Reagan, won't attend the funeral, a spokeswoman said, saying "she is no longer able to make that kind of a trip."

During her bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, Bachmann often compared herself to the famously strong-minded Thatcher, who was nicknamed the "Iron Lady."

She even ran a television ad in Iowa labeling herself "America's Iron Lady" alongside a portrait of Thatcher.

I don't recall Thatcher ever expressing an interet in dual citizenship with Switzerland.

The disrespect shown by the British people to the death of Margaret Thatcher is appalling. It is no wonder the UK is in a state of decline.

Who better to speak than the people who paid the price? And are still paying. As you note, Thatcher's lunacy has led to nothing but further decline, just like Reagan's. When your policies are aimed at hurting most of the people don't expect them to be sorry, or silent, when you're gone.
Thatcher did not want Britain to turn in to a nation serfs who subsistence depends on the next handout from the government. Very sad.

OMG! We are not sending this twit to Thatcher's funeral? We should cancel her passport to avoid any potential embarrassment to the U.S. Bachmann: America's patron saint of ignorance and hypocracy. Great! Just Great!

What a disgrace to have Bachman and Blackburn representing the people (women) of America. They sure aren't representative of me. One doesn't know her facts, and the other one can twist anything around to her advantage. The moronic and the mean.

Bachmann should understand the difference between being an "Iron Lady" and an "Iron Headed Lady." It is criminal that someone as dumb as she is a member of Congress.

Why three commerical planes ticket to one funeral? You know their going to fly either business or first class, it doesn't take three people to show are country respect for the Iron Lady, is this the why we have a State Department for. I am a republician and this is a waste of money.

Does Congresswomen Bachman realize that Prime Minister Thatcher was a strong supporter of Englands heath care program that guarantees each and ever citizen is covered??? It goes a step beyond "OBAMACARE" which Ms. Bachman .hates.

Liberals and leftists can stay away. We don't need your kind at the ceremony for this great lady. Save your time and energy for your hero Castro.
Then why diminish Thatcher with this delegation of lightweights and wannabees? Conservatives should be hanging their heads, or hanging Boehner, for including Bachmann and Marsha " Skeet-Shooter" Blackburn in this delegation.

And when Bachman gets kicked out of office, we too can go around singing "ding dong, the witch is dead..."just like the British did for Maggie...

Bachmann committed to the trip before finding out that this isn't the lady who wrote the Harry Potter books. It's too late for her to back down now.

England will need another Margaret Thatcher if they ever hope to achieve greatness again. They are heading back down the socialist sewer.

There are a lot of reasons for people not to morn Maggie. Her bellicose demeanor, the rotten opinion she held of working class Britons, her close and long association with proven pedophiles, the fact that she liked Ronnie Rayguns. The British press is full of recriminations against her regime, and justly so. People in the U.S. who profess admiration either weren't around when she was in office or are shills for the 1%.

As for Bachmann, the fact that she still holds office is testimony to the efficacy of gerrymandering.

Thatcher is still hated in Britain by many despite the glorification in the media. Makes sense that a fool and hate-monger like Bachmann would be invited.
