First on CNN: Senate background checks vote delayed

Washington (CNN) - Supporters of a bipartisan compromise to expand background checks for guns sales currently don't have the 60 votes they will need to win approval of their amendment so a vote on the proposal - which was expected midweek - is unlikely before the end of the week, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, told CNN in an exclusive interview Monday.

The vote is being pushed back so Manchin and others can build support for the controversial plan.

"We've got to work hard don't we," Manchin said, acknowledging he would need to convince a large number of undecided senators to support the measure which is opposed by the National Rifle Association. "We've got to work hard and the more people know about the bill, the more people read the bill, the more people see the facts of the bill, it breaks down all the misnomers."

He said he was reaching out to senators who voted last week against beginning debate on guns.

"We're working on all of them. Some of them who might not have voted for cloture might be more receptive once they see the facts," he said. "Now that we have gun groups coming out in support, it really helps us."

Asked if the vote would take place Tuesday or Wednesday, as supporters have hoped, Manchin said he didn't think so.

"I would say by the end of the week, probably. I really do," he said.

C'mon Republicans, 90% of Americans want this. November 2014 isn't that far away.

It sure sounds like all those Democrat Senators from red states know better than to blindly follow the anti 2nd Amendment Democrat Party and vote against the will of the people in the states that they are SUPPOSED to represent.

Registration leads to confiscation. California in the 90's is proof of that fact.

We regulate cars more than guns. Cars are registered with a license plate, you have to pass a test and be issued a license with photo id that you must carry at all times along with proof of insurance. Soon only outlaws will be able to drive. Soon we will be a totalitarian hell like Canada forced to take mass transit to foreign Canadian football.and eat their terrible ham masquerading as foreign Canadian bacon.

Looks like Obama's own party is getting cold feet and doesn't want to vote for a law they know will do nothing but harass law abiding citizens. I guess they figure some of the hundred million gun owners live in their states and that they vote. I don't know why everybody says Democrats are dumb.

"the bank"???? and your little brain can't tell the difference between local paper records across the country and a large centralized government owned and run database??

Can someone explain how 60 votes are needed? This filibuster thing has got to be changed.

Registration leads to straw buyers going out of business. The only reason conservatives believe otherwise is because they have been told what to believe.

Say gun nuts.....Google knows more about your gun purchases than you realize. There are already several databases about you. Purchase guns or ammo online, you are in a database. Do a background check, you are in a database. Sign up via internet to the NRA, you are in a database. Only you slowcoach neanderthals who just found out the internet can be used for more than getting your rocks off don't know this.

And BTW, the government would not need a registry to confiscate guns. Half of you nutcases would complain openly and invite them to come and try.

You guys need to do background checks on people who buy bombs too. What where you thinking?

Just to let you guys know. I have purchased around 7 guns in my life from used to brand new. Every single purchase they did a background check on me. I am not sure what all the commotion is about? Shouldn't this be the norm? I would think our government is crazy if they didn't do them.

So, please describe this database, in detail if you know so much. A background check is just that- it checks databases, it doesn't build one. You're just parroting the NRA blather about background checks lead to registration leads to confiscation leads to embarrassing skin disorders- all hooey.

There is no longer such thing as a majority vote. We may as well stop kidding ourselves that we live in a democracy because the GOP has decided that even if a majority want something they will stop it anyways. And it's not just gun laws... it's every law. Thank you again GOP for insuring are country never progresses. Your 1950's ideals are turning us into a third world country.
