Obama receives more briefings on Boston manhunt

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama was again briefed Friday by his top national security team as a massive manhunt unfolded for one of the suspected perpetrators in the Boston Marathon bombings.

The briefing concluded shortly after 4 p.m. ET, according to a White House official. He then called Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino "to express his condolences for the MIT police officer who was killed overnight," the official stated.

"The President said that the entire country is behind the people of Boston as well as Massachusetts, and that the full force of the Federal Government will continue to be made available until those responsible are brought to justice," the official said.

Lisa Monaco, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, briefed the president Friday afternoon in the Oval Office.

Earlier in the day, Obama met in the Situation Room with more officials, including Monaco, Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder and FBI Director Robert Mueller. It began at 9:45 a.m. ET and ended at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Other top officials present included Obama's chief of staff Denis McDonough and National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Secretary of State John Kerry, and CIA Director John Brennan participated in the morning briefing by videoconference, the official said.

CNN identified Kerry, along with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Director of National Intellegence James Clapper, entering the White House later Friday, though a White House official said they were attending a previously scheduled meeting of top national security officials that does not include the president.

Obama was briefed overnight by Monaco on the situation unfolding in Boston and Watertown, Massachusetts.

Napolitano, previously scheduled to testify at a Congressional hearing Friday, cancelled her appearance because of the ongoing situation in the Boston area.

Your comment about "idiots" in the country is expected. In reality, the idiots are those who expect gun laws to prevent ALL gun crimes. Only an idiot would think laws would be 100% effective. We have speed limits and they work quite well to some extent. It's also quite foolish to go to every state and locality and count the gun-related laws – then declare some national total. I'm a retired Soldier, an avid hunter, a collector, and amatuer gunsmith. I know guns quite well. I also know the 2nd Admendment quite well and do not see anything in it that defines a "well-regulated militia", gives carte blanche permission to own any type of weaon w/o restriction, or even defines the term "arms". Weapons are not "natural born rights we receive at birth". We need common sense and not mindless N.R.A. sound-bites. Think.

@ThinkAgain....because this administration is not complicit in the lib media's attempt to pin every tragedy on some vast right wing conspiracy. You should try pulling your head out of your messiah's back side once in a while.

My, my. Sure is a lot of grumbling going on between all of you. Nothing like a good old fashion tragedy to bring out the worst in America.

Have at it folks. I'm out of here.

    truth hurts but reality bites

Massachusettts is one of the hardest places in the country to get a gun

so you say every citizen should be able to return fire if confronted by a criminal with a weapon? Great idea idiot...bullets only hit the criminal in a dense neighborhood of small children. Go back to your basement but this time turn off faux news and fools.

    @ Fair is Fair

I called for Enhanced Interrogation Techniques for the dipstick that was mailing the ricin letters. As far as these bombers go, I say kill em'. No need wasting money on a trial. We'll hold court in the street.

If GWB was in office he would have flown the terrorists out of the country just like he did with Bin Laden's family after 9/11.

...they are criminals and probably stole the gun anyway.

Yeah, and if the owner of their stolen guns was "responsible" the guns wouldn't have been stolen.

Obama and his merry band of leftist tools must be supremely disappointed to learn the suspects do not fit their narrative.

    What "narrative"?

    Larry L,

Don't be another of the majority of idiots in this country! Bomb materials are already illegal and that didn't stop these fools from utilizing them. Another gun law would not have made a difference with this event and frankly won't solve the social evils that plague our times.

Except for fact that the dead guy apparently used a firearm to kill a MIT police officer.

  12. In Boston

Local news reports are all over the map ...... together with thousands of police, FIA, troops, et al ...several people reported to have been taken into custody - two from the house where these two guys lived; a train stopped outside CT with third person on board; and now another "associate" is being surrounded. An unexploded device found near Boston's Mass Transit; Police now calling for Russian translator to question a new associate ....bomb disposal units on site -- This seems to be a broader net than just the 2 suspects..... Meanwhile, one MIT officer dead; one transit police wounded; over 100 shots fired in suburban neighborhood in Watertown...

Lightest moment of the day - when gun fire erupts outside a suburban house in early morning hours, a young woman calls 911 and reports explosives and lots of gunfire outside - the 911 operator tells her "I don't warn to alarm you, but there is a major gun fight going on in front of your home – get down on the floor as low as you can..." as she lies down, a bullet goes whizzing through the house in the same room

I have seen a lot of shoot 'em up police movies ...but these happenings would be too unbelievable for the movies

    just sayin

so how smart was it of obama to come to boston when these two very dangerous people were still on the lose??? can you imagine if they decided to go out in a blaze of glory trying to get to him at that church? obama really needs to get over his camera addiction.

If that were the case BOTH bad guys would be dead right now. And if President Obama DIDN'T show up you would be bashing him for that!

Nails, ball bearings, timers and pressure cookers aren't illegal. Nor is purchasing the small amount of fertilizer needed to bring their plan to fruition.

"how smart was it for obama to come to Boston while these two very dangerous people were still on the lose"....
Good to know you care about President Obama. However, would you have him hide in one of Cheney's
undisclosed locations, cowering behind a desk. It appeared that Bostonians appreciated him speaking at
the Memorial. You really need to "get over" your hate.

Updating Obama, sounds like he has no clue and certainly should not be credited with "solving" this manhunt just as he knew nothing about Bin Laden until it was ready to go down!

It isn't President Obama's job to SOLVE crimes – that is the job of law enforcement. Did you beheave this way when the previous occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue showed up on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, under a "mission accomplished" banner while decked out in a flight suit? No? Didn't think so. You really need to get over your hatred-induced pettines before you develop an ulcer. Then again, that would give you something else to blame on President Obama.

markus – So do you really think background checks involve scouring your social media accounts? Do you really want the government getting access to your social media and email accounts to perform a background check? The only thing background checks will bring up is a prior criminal record. Even with the limited information we know about these two, it doesn't look like they had prior records. All the background checks in the world would not have stopped these maniacs.

Can we at least catch or kill this bozo before all of us start using him to trash one another's positions? I'd like to see him taken alive for the intel value, but I won't criticize the cops if they're quick on the trigger. This is one very dangerous boy and he knows he has nothing to lose. I just hope it doesn't end up in a hostage situation.

And I am not going to believe any new development I see on any news media until I confirm it with 2 others.
