Honoring cops, Obama keeps pressure on gun control

Washington (CNN) - Honoring police officers at the White House on Saturday, President Barack Obama made another call on Congress to enact tough restrictions on guns.

At the annual “Top Cops” event in the East Room, Obama said the nation needs new “common sense” laws that could make it “harder for dangerous criminals to get their hands on lethal weapons."

The new laws would help protect police officers like the ones being honored Saturday, Obama said.

“If top cops can risk their lives to do their jobs, the rest of us should just be able to summon some tiny fraction of courage and the same sense of responsibility,” he said. “And certainly, that applies for those of us responsible for supporting law enforcement and first responders here in Washington.”

Obama’s push for new gun laws met a serious obstacle in April when the Senate defeated a bipartisan measure that would have expanded background checks to gun shows and online sales.

Senators who opposed the measure have come under harsh criticism from gun control groups, and Obama and Senate Democrats have vowed to continue pushing for new rules.

At the event Saturday, Obama paid particular tribute to officers who rushed to help people after the Boston Marathon bombing in April, and who participated in the manhunt for the suspects several days later.

“These officers represent the best of us, and they deserve the best from us,” the president said. “And that begins with being thankful to them not just today, but for the rest of their lives and recognizing the sacrifices not only they make, but their parents and spouses and kids who watch their loved ones go off and serve every day, knowing that there's real danger out there.”

II hate that Obama tries to use police officers to promote gun control. I've worked as a police officer and usually the only ones that are for more gun control are those in the higher ranks with political ambitions. More gun control would have not made me feel safer or really impacted my job one bit. The proposed laws would be worthless. You want to support law enforcement? Help us enforce the laws we have and actually follow through with prosecuting the criminals that are arrested.

Ask any law enforcement official who works in an urban aria about assault rifles and 30 round magazines , they want them off the streets .

A bombing occurs, we blame the bomber. A drunk driver kills someone we blame the driver, We have a shooting, we blame the firearm? LOGIC? By all rights-> pressure cookers and fireworks, should undergo a background check to purchase, and the feds keep a record of use.

Background checks are only as useful as the information in its database–Hence, for any such registering of guns and background checks to be useful, are you willing to give up all your expectations of privacy regarding your medical and mental health history to the US government to peruse?

If you ever had anti-depressant medicine, even for just after a major operation, or received mental health counseling because you were blue or dealing with grief, that could be the basis of some pencil pusher bureaucrat in government to determine by a strict set of rules that you cannot own a firearm. That's infringement without due process. The Founding Fathers would call it tyranny.

Oh, and maybe the government needs more information to add your background check to make such decisions! SUCH AS.... Failure to pay taxes on time, misdemeanors like traffic tickets, political affiliation that the Southern Poverty Law Center and Harry Reid deem radical and dangerous–the possibilities are endless for the government to take as much personal information about you, and decide if you can own a firearm. That's infringement without due process. That's Tyranny.

Also, doesn't it bother you in the least bit that government is not as conversely accommodating being transparent as it demands us to be? After all, if the Government has nothing to hide, what is it afraid of, hmmmm?

Also has anyone looked into the dangerous UN treaty on firearms. This treaty is to be signed by the president making firearm ownership illegal and/ or very restrictive. Essentially a loophole to go around the Second Amendment. This is our president agreeing to other nations demands, essentially giving other countries a voice in America.

Every cop I've known supports gun control measures. Conservatives in Congress (elsewhere, too) don't like cops, however. This might be a fruitless appeal from Obama.

The considerable majority of Police Officers in this country are against more gun control laws. Where did Obama dig up this disturbing mob of unprincipled elitists?

Only people in the arm forces should carry guns, and people wanting to get a permit for hunting should have a background check.also guns should never be allowed in national parks.

Is that man capable of interacting with people without pushing his agenda? It takes away from the sincerity of the moment, whether it be mothers or cops, to use it to espouse his pet projects.

It's important for the President to work with law enforcement officials in conveying the many challenges police officers, Sheriff's Department,, DEA, FBI Agents, and Special Forces face on a daily basis. Law Enforcement officials play a key role in disseminating to the general public the inefficiencies and senselessness in our current gun laws.

Daily, Law Enforcement is confronted with situations on the street involving criminals packing semi-automatics, assault rifles; or criminals using high capacity magazine clips with over 10 rounds of ammunition. Law Enforcement officials need Americans to understand that when they are out-matched in terms of weapons, this jeopardizes the lives of the officers, and place communities at risk. We must support law enforcement by banning military style weapons, and keeping them out of the hands of civilians. Universal background checks will keep weapons out of the hands of the severely mentally ill; those individuals with restraining orders, or a history of domestic violence; or crime, and allow Law Enforcement to be more efficient at doing their jobs. Law Enforcement needs our help.
