(CNN) - Minnesota became the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriages Tuesday after Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, signed a bill giving same-sex couples the right to marry.
"It's history," his Twitter account read, along with a photo of him signing the bill on the Capitol steps. The state Senate on Monday voted 37-30 in favor of approving the legislation.

The bill follows a failed attempt last year to define marriage as between one man and one woman with an amendment to the state constitution.
The Minnesota House approved the measure on Thursday.
The divisive issue drew crowds to Washington earlier this year when the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on a federal and state marriage law. The court heard challenges to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman, and to California's Proposition 8, a ban on same-sex marriage approved by voters.
The 11th state to legalize same-sex marriage, Delaware, did so last week.

congrats to the state of minnesota.......enjoy your new freedom and additional revenue that will be generated ....
capitalism only works in a free market.....less government control and more personal freedom ....
Very sad day for that state...
I have never been prouder of my home state! Congratulations to those legislators who were brave enough to cast their vote for equality, and thank you to everyone who made this a reality!
Good for them. It's about time.
12 down, 38 to go.
Excellent! Congrats to Minnesota.
Sometimes I feel like our country has been taken over by militant Christians, but this give me some hope for the future.
The Marriage Equality train has left the station, with no turning back! Where will it stop next?
Why did CNN take so long to report this? The Minnesota Senate passed this yesterday.
Notice all the states that have legalized same-sex marriage are near the Canadian border? Shows that true human rights and freedom DOES spread.
Congratulations to the people of Minnesota!!
Congratulations Minnesota. Welcome to the right side... Marriage equality.
We're making progress now. Next legalize weed, outlaw religion, switch from a monetary based economy to a resource based economy, teach kids to question everything they're told, stop going to war, play more music, and make more love!
Take all the states run by Democrats and then look at the ones pushing the Gay agenda.
Now line them all up and look at their balance sheets.
They are all the ones deepest in debt.
Maybe its time the people wake up and stop catering to the low lifes and the less than 2%ers and focus on the economy instead.
Minnesota – Land of debt and high taxes, but at least a homo can get married there. WOW! Be proud.
Way to go Minnesota!
You have officially quit circling the bowl and are officially down the drain.

This is an issue that divides the Religious Right and the Religious/Secular Left. I think it is great that a person can marry anyone they love. Its such a non-issue in that its not going to destroy the country. If people believe in love then they should believe in it for everyone.
same o same o BORING
Hurray for MN... but now I may have to come up with more excuses for missing a friends wedding.
C'mon California! You're next!
Congrats to MN. CNN apparently has the b-team running the show and writing articles sourced from twitter. This had been developing for a couple of weeks now.
Go Minnesota! Go Delaware! Go Rhode Island! Let's us reach all 50 states before 2020!
Proud to be a Minnesotan today.
Finally...progression b/c USA had become a hypocrit and was contradicting the bible. It's okay to keep religion in laws/marriage but okay to withdraw from school and other aspects in life. If we're going to do it right...keep the face. Gays pay taxes and have feelings like the rest of us and besides a lot of people (guys in particular) are gay on the down low but like to make exceptions for their needs and they are the same one opposing the equality. Be who you are and quit trying to run other lives.
.......We are NOT comin' fer yer gunz............BUT.....we are gonna let sweeties marry............
