Obama salutes 'fallen heroes' in Memorial Day address

(CNN) - President Barack Obama offered a salute to the troops in his weekly address on Saturday, capping a week that saw him discussing national security and terrorism on several occasions.

"Unofficially, (Monday is) the start of summer - a chance for us to spend some time with family and friends, at barbecues or the beach, getting a little fun and relaxation in before heading back to work," he said. "It's also a day on which we set aside some time, on our own or with our families, to honor and remember all the men and women who have given their lives in service to this country we love."

The commander in chief said the country has an obligation to "care for the loved ones that our fallen service members have left behind" and do the same for veterans.

He did not speak directly about the backlog of claims awaiting attention from the Veterans Administration, but did note the military-related remarks he made this week.

Obama spoke Thursday at the National Defense University about the war on terrorism, the drone program and the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Then on Friday, he spoke at the commencement ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy.

"The young men and women I met at the Naval Academy this week know the meaning of service," he said. "They've studied the heroes of our history. They've chosen to follow in their footsteps - to stand their watch, man a ship, lead a platoon. They are doing their part. And each of us must do ours."

If the President is so conscious of our nations past transgressions against the third world, it must have been really tough to salute the organization that was on the delivery end of those alleged transgressions

@Observer,just remember two names the republicans and the MIC two bed partners that greed ,insensibility help create wars...Don't pin this on both partys because of their trust in Gen.Colin Powell in not delivering lies not only to both houses but the UN as well..Those lies cost thousands of innocents their lives and the republicans and the MIC are ones that have their blood on their hands no one elses..Remember also in a 2002 speech how Bush hated Hussein and Iraq because in 1993 they tried unsecessfully to assasinate his dad in Kuwait after Desert Storm and young Bush said publicly if he were elected president he'd get Hussein for his father as well, isn't that a strong reason for that Texas imbecile to create a war in retribution for that attempt on his fathers life ,I think it could be possible the way Bushs motives were and how things went the way he publicly spoke..Check out my facts and it'll show you how delushional and ignorent this president in Bush really was in killing thousands of innocents to get back at one man in Hussein who tried to take his fathers life years before, its not BS if you read the related facts you'll see there's more than meets the eyes in this war created with his lies!!

The right-wing filth just can't take a day off from their blind Obama hatred. It really makes me despise that segment of America. No President, even Bush (who deserved every bit of criticism he got) has never faced such hyper-partisan character attacks. But it's right-wingers we're talking about, so no big surprise. They lack intelligence, literacy, common sense, integrity, and morals, just to name a few.

@Observer,remember who's behind those so called transgressions, your republican party and their partners in crime the MIC..Republicans who advocate but are rarely associated with wars except to push funding for them but never enlist or duck out from being drafted in Gingrich,Boehner who are just a few as Limbaugh that talk military but never served in any capacity militarily...Republicans with little over 30% ever involved in past, present military service advocate as I said factually before for wars,MIC and democrates with over 70% involved in past ,present military service are the diplomatic ones rather seeking peace, diplomacy here and abroad than blood spilled, deaths that the republicans that have basicly no skin in the game have endorsed ...If republicans want war as I've suggested factually than send their relatives or friends there so if they come back or if they don't at all you can be sure they won't be as fast to advocate something that involves one of their own ,I bet on that my self!!
