Washington (CNN) - The House of Representatives Tuesday passed a GOP-sponsored bill banning so- called "late term abortions" - procedures for women who are beyond 20 weeks into their pregnancy. The vote was 228-196, mostly along party lines.
The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Trent Franks, R-Arizona, stirred up controversy last week when he opposed an effort by House Democrats to add an exception for women who are raped, arguing that "the incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low."
House Democrats seized on the comment, and because of the backlash GOP leaders later decided to add new language to the bill allowing women who get pregnant as a result of rape or incest to obtain an abortion if they report the crime to authorities.
The White House has threatened a veto on the legislation, but the Democratic-led Senate is not expected to take up the measure.
Liberal Democrats oppose abortion as well, I am a Democrat and I am pro-life.
Those aren't late terms – the Supreme Court allowed up to 24 weeks! That's the law of the land regardless of what the GOP and fools like Franks wants. Women: this is the war on women everyone is talking about. Even if you don't personally approve, don't deny this right to fellow women.
Who the hell could support late-term abortions? If it takes you 22 weeks to decide if you want to keep your baby, you don't deserve it anyway. Abortions should be first-term only. That's a compromise that most reasonable people should be able to support.
Divide and conquer
If they are going to force women to be surrogates, then they should compensate them in addition to providing long term care and education for the children. No pro lifer talks about the economics of having and unwanted or physically/mentally disabled child. Put your money where your mouth is. I will bet my ovaries that NONE of the sponsors of this bill will adopt. They certainly have the money and means to do so!
Nice to know Republicans again know what to focus on. These idiots need removed from office.
Ladies – please remember this in 2014. If they can tell you what to do with your body, what's to stop me or anyone else?? Put these men in their places and help us elect people who will let us make a difference in things that matter.
I don't get the republican party. They complain that poor families have too many kids, cost the taxpayers money and they never want to pay susidies for healthcare or food. Yet at the same time they want the populace to just have more unchecked births that will further lead to overpopulation and a worsening of the issues of poverty and healthcare. What do these people stand for? Nothing that makes sense, that's for sure.
House Of Representatives = Pointless, Shrieking Futility
The House continues to pass bills that have no hope of becoming law. Simply more of the same for the obdurate House which is supposed represent to the will of the people.
Looks like no responses allowed they mean
I am pro-choice, and this is a good thing. Day after pill and first 9wks ok. After that it's murder.
morons. im not particularly for or against abortions, but they KNEW this wouldnt pass the senate. so why bother? to 'make a statement' on the taxpayer's dime? the house seems to like to do that a lot.
It's disgusting to know people are ok with killin a child that's been living for up to 5 months.
Once again, a bunch of out-of-touch old men wasting time on established law.The 228 that voted are not pro-life but rather pro-birth. Once baby born, no sense giving caring anymore.
Didn't they run on jobs?...where;s the jobs GOP..you know..the ones you destroyed the last time you were in office
When are we going to deport these far right hate filled terrorists from our great nation before they enslave all our women
The gop agenda of the gop garbage of America party is to defund all social programs, if you haven't figured it out yet including soc sec Medicare, medicade ,food stamps and anything else they don't use . The gop conservatives are truly the garbage of America , ask demint from sc.
Obama will veto this because he knows it would take most women that get abortions at least 20 weeks to figure out if they have been raped.
Yeah. There's no way the Senate will even touch this one. Congrats on yet another gigantic waste of government time and money, neocons.
And where are the house jobs bills, while representatives continue their war on women? The extreme right (I don't like to say Republicans, because the current crop are not our grandfathers Republicans, but some mutant breed from God knows where) continues to help gut the middle class while they manipulate our worse traits: Heaven forfend that a woman has an abortion or two gay people marry, but it's ok for hunger to expand, ok for wages to collapse and jobs to get shipped overseas, and for the nation to suffer while thousands die in unnecessary wars. Vote these mad people out - if you can survive the voter supression laws - or we will continue our drift toward third world status.
Anyone whose been raped is going to get things dealt with long before 22 weeks. Obviously most men have no idea now traumatic rape is. My guess is that what's really at stake is the rhetoric of the abortion movement, rather than reality. The point might be better taken when considering incest.
Late term abortion is barbaric, heinous, and irresponsible on the part of the mother waiting so long to make the decision. I am not pro-life in the strict sense of the term nor a right-winged fanatical. I do believe it is a woman's choice to make the decision of abortion UP TO THE POINT where the fetus is considered viable. But beyond that point it is as described above. I believe if anyone witnessed such an abortion at this late stage they would be in agreement with me. I acknowledge this is my personal opinion, but the line should be drawn at a certain point.
The Republicans are corrupt! This is unconstitutional! Fire all of them in 2014!
Your tax dollars at work.
