Washington (CNN) - The House of Representatives Tuesday passed a GOP-sponsored bill banning so- called "late term abortions" - procedures for women who are beyond 20 weeks into their pregnancy. The vote was 228-196, mostly along party lines.
The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Trent Franks, R-Arizona, stirred up controversy last week when he opposed an effort by House Democrats to add an exception for women who are raped, arguing that "the incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low."
House Democrats seized on the comment, and because of the backlash GOP leaders later decided to add new language to the bill allowing women who get pregnant as a result of rape or incest to obtain an abortion if they report the crime to authorities.
The White House has threatened a veto on the legislation, but the Democratic-led Senate is not expected to take up the measure.
why does there need to be a rape exception in a late term abortion bill? if you cant decide if you want to keep your rapists' child in 22 weeks, then i really dont care if you are 'forced' to carry to term when you change your mind during week 23....
In many states, if a driver hits a woman who is 22 weeks pregnant and she loses the [insert your term here], that driver is charged with manslaughter. Can we please get some consistency? Either it is a child or it is not.
Oh thank God!! That will lower unemployment..create jobs..lower the deficit..end wars...lower taxes..give people heath insurance..like Congress has...end corruption...!! This is progress?
GOP – Big Government at your service ladies!
Can we move on to something less divisive like jobs and the freaking economy?!!! These guys are nothing more than partisan hacks!
It's all about jobs, remember?
The one sign say it all. DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD.
How dim are they in the house ?? The ppl tell them time and again, to work on economic issues, Yet they continue to focus on social issues, Then they will wonder why when they dont get re elected !!
Just wondering if this will effect the tests and options available for Down Syndrome babies. i know that the test takes place late in pregnancy but am not sure
It is a
womans right to do what she chooses to do with her body if thats the case why dont they pass a bill that castrates all first time sex offenders
Jobs, jobs, jobs...
Now you know what is important to the GOP, deny Womens rights, deny childrens rights, deny mimority rights. through policy, and call it social conservatism. Another najme for hatred and bigotry.
A disgusting abuse of political office . . .
Women need to decide whether to a abart or not–leave it to her. Not your business.
I guess the GOP is hoping those babies don't grow up to be women.
I thought late term abortions were already illegal?
And the GOP, led by fools from Arizona and Texas continues it's downward spiral. They've learned nothing from the past, will not change their ultra radical, right wing, misogynistic ways, and so will continue to lose ground. It's a perfect case of "cutting off your nose to spite your face". Their broken record of idiotic rape comments, second amendment comments and hatred of anyone who is not white anglo saxon and protestant (with a few crazy catholics thrown in for good measure) will insure that the country will move on without them. Good by and good riddance.
It will never pass the Senate. Thank God.
i wonder what kind of economy we will be living in right now if these backward repubs show half the intensity on jobs as they do in meddling in woman wombs and destroying obamacare. these empty barrel talks of jobs jobs jobs. how further can the American people be duke by this repubs party. its been 3 years now since they took over the house and not one legitimate way of pushing jobs to the American people. all i here is cut cut cut, obstruct obstruct obstruct, and pander to their extreme wing of their party, who want one thing, and that's the failure of this country so they can blame Obama.
Glad to see DC is continuing to fiddle while the country burns. Economy is barely stumbling along and what does the House decide to do? Take up partisan politics that just further divides the country. Politics is the art of compromise to make sure things that need doing get done, the yahoos in DC seem to have forgotten this.
More Republican pandering. With all that we have to do in this country, can't we have a more constructive use of time? This bill tries to cut into the tail end of the 2nd trimester which goes from the 12th week to the 24th week. RvW put the fetus age of viability at 24 weeks not 20 weeks. The 20th week still falls in the part where the mother's health is still the most important consideration not the fetus'. Move on Repubs...
How dare they attempt to get in the way of America's genocide?
The GOP's war on women continues...
So it is not a human being if it is the result of rape or incest and therfore ok to kill. If you really think that life begins at conception then you cannot justify exceptions without actually "okaying" the killing of innocent human beings. Just saying!!!
In other words, this is yet another complete waste of time and taxpayer money by the members of the House GOP.
