Obama to make Keystone announcement during speech

(CNN) - President Barack Obama plans to make clear in an upcoming speech that the State Department should approve the controversial Keystone pipeline project "only if it will not lead to a net increase in overall greenhouse gas emissions," a senior administration official said Tuesday.

The Keystone project does nothing for America. It is a gift to big oil to more easily sell really lousy oil abroad. It does not further our oil independence, and will more than likely harm our environment when the tarsands oil spills (and no one has an effective means of clean-up yet). The company has at best a sketchy reputation, and pipelines that carry this stuff are well known to leak- sometimes in less than 5 years.
It is simply a bad idea- and that the GOP promotes it, that certifies how bad an idea it really is.

    About time.

For the "Rudys" out there... told you months ago he'd cave. "Only if it will not lead to a net increase in overall greenhouse gas emissions,".... BWAHAHAHAHAHA... how you gonna measure that?

I'm not fond of this pipeline nor am I fond of fracking for natural gas when we're seeing it's adverse affects on drinking water. However, I'm an advocate for getting off of fossil fuels and finding alternative means of energy. Let's stick with solar, wind and electric for the planet's sake.

Hm. Let me help the President: yes, it will add greenhouse gases. Oil will be refined. And that oil will eventually be burned in a vehicle.

Quite apart from gases, the pipeline will cause environmental damage just by existing. It will be an eyesore. It will also leak. I think a pipeline in Alberta busted open just last weekend (perhaps a Canadian can clarify the details; I'm on a cellphone at lunch here).

Obama's condition, assuming this preview of the speech is correct, is silly. The proper answer is NO KEYSTONE PIPELINE.

That tar sands oil is going to reach the world market one way or the other; thru the US to refineries int he Gulf or to the Pacific through Canada and on to Asia. Deand is not going to drop all that much in the near term.

OMG! Green house emissions are the least of our worries, sort of. What about oil spills, our environment, our wildlife?
Putting our land (remember the Gulf and BP?) in harms way so that Canada can ship its oil overseas? A couple thousand "temporary" jobs is not worth it!

Appears that President Obama will use a sleight of hand to approve the Keystone pipeline project. This may be the disastrous turning point for the environment.

If it doesn't benefit us in the US, don't do it Mr. President. If the GOP is behind it, it's a trap. Whatever they suggest, do the exact opposite because the only thing the GOP wants is to see you FAIL. If the country takes a hit, oh well, maybe they won't be dumb enough to elect another one that looks anything like you...... That's the GOP mantra.

Speaking of has anyone heard about the Petroleum Coke aka Pet Coke that the Koch Brothers have piled up along the Detroit River? Citizens are finally speaking up about it. There was a big protest about it the other day. People wouldn't let the trucks through. They claim it's harmless, but if that's the truth why isn't it sitting around the Koch Bros houses???
