Obama's full statement on same-sex marriage ruling

(CNN) - Responding to Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling giving historic wins to same sex marriage supporters, President Barack Obama released the following statement:

"I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act. This was discrimination enshrined in law. It treated loving, committed gay and lesbian couples as a separate and lesser class of people. The Supreme Court has righted that wrong, and our country is better off for it. We are a people who declared that we are all created equal – and the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

This ruling is a victory for couples who have long fought for equal treatment under the law; for children whose parents’ marriages will now be recognized, rightly, as legitimate; for families that, at long last, will get the respect and protection they deserve; and for friends and supporters who have wanted nothing more than to see their loved ones treated fairly and have worked hard to persuade their nation to change for the better.

So we welcome today’s decision, and I’ve directed the Attorney General to work with other members of my Cabinet to review all relevant federal statutes to ensure this decision, including its implications for Federal benefits and obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.

On an issue as sensitive as this, knowing that Americans hold a wide range of views based on deeply held beliefs, maintaining our nation’s commitment to religious freedom is also vital. How religious institutions define and consecrate marriage has always been up to those institutions. Nothing about this decision – which applies only to civil marriages – changes that.

The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free."

The court DID NOT right a wrong,... It only reinforced a wrong.

Obama 2008 – Obama told MTV he believes marriage is "between a man and a woman" and that he is "not in favor of gay marriage." this is the leader of the pack here, never a belief one. no convictions, no morals. I sheep that will not lead but always blindly follow right off the cliff.

I would say "This is a great day" for our country! I am an older woman, straight, family grown up and still working. I believe equality for all the people not just some of the people. We are all"God's children". Hooray! Hooray!

"Why stop here? Let's allow anything and everything to marry. After all, discrimination is discrimination isn't it?"

Quite so. The problem with the RIGHT is everything has to be Black or White. They have no perception for nuance or rational judgement.

"For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error" (Rom. 1:26–27).
"Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 7).
So shameless act has been accepted as permissible thing in our country, God save our country from Eternal Fire.

Why do liberals show hatred and bigotry towards the polygamists?

@Woman In California – "Why stop here? Let's allow anything and everything to marry. After all, discrimination is discrimination isn't it?"

Uhm, no. That logic is foolhardy, and doesn't apply here. Let's look at what marriage is from a LEGAL STANDPOINT. Marriage is a legal binding contract. Before getting married, (at least in the State of Illinois where I live)...
    – The couple in question must prove that they are not blood related. So legally marrying a brother/sister/mother/father...in other words INCEST is out.
    – According to law, no minor under the age of 18 is allowed to legally sign a contract. So marrying a minor is out.
    – No animals can "sign" a contract. So no, you can't legally marry your dog.
    – Now I'm not sure on this one, but if a couple marries, then a person goes and legally marries someone else, isn't that fraud? Lawyers, please check me on that.

So basically I just refuted your entire argument. SWEET! Points for logic!

California says: "OUTSTANDING !!! Now we have case law for polygamy."

...from the people who tried to elect a MORMON as President? That's funny.

"OR will liberals show their hatred and bigotry?"

So funny watching you cons call liberals hateful bigots, because you're mad that a bigoted law just got struck down. I swear hypocrisy has become a RELIGION for you cons lately. Having a brown man win the WH has REALLY twisted you guys up, it seems.

All this will do is increase chaos and further diminish morality(morality has had to already been correspondingly diminished to get to this point). People look at this as freedom increasing and fail to see the areas where our freedoms are being completely eroded. Gay marriage is nothing but a smoke screen for people to look at as a gauge of freedoms in this country; and as people are gauging freedoms by this the USA is quickly becoming a police state. Please wake up people.

I have to seat and pause for a minuter to think about one man one woman mentality here. I was watching cnn the religious sec hold on to their opinion again, is this not the same as when black people got their freedom, or when women became equal to men. equality for all not just for the hetero and religious of our country, but for all americans

I personally agree with everything you said with a few exceptions: God is NOT SURPRISED or THREATNED by this decision. We are. Since it is not our place to judge, let us just respect this decision (although we don't agree with it) and move on. This nation is not totally stupid as demonstrated by keeping "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the dollar bill. When they decide to strip that, we can truly start to worry.

I have to ask myself how American will feel about giving our gay military personnel and their dependents full benefits after this ruling. the ability to pull their benefits as all hetero counter parts have had for years. I have to ask if they have even thought that far ahead, and how they will react when they do realize this is going to happen. I say to myself its about time for equality for all citizen of the US not just for the religious and hetero sexual. may god bless all Americans not just the few but for all

The only reason that was put there in 1954 was to serve as propaganda in the cold war...a sort of flipping of the bird at the "godless commies."

Although I don't agree with this decision, I respect it.

It just might interest you to know, my two best friends are a gay couple and maybe one of the reasons we get along so well, is because we are opposites. They're trustworthy and great business advisors and I don't think I could find two better people to call friends. While I am unhappy with this decision, I am happy for them, because they are wonderful, caring people and as a friend, I have to wish them well.

Thank GOD for the Supreme Court's decisions today!

We are a free nation and getting more free every year!

Religion does not promote freedom, it DICTATES control, hate, bigotry, and ignorance. Today puts religion back in its place – CHURCH not in law!
