State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

(CNN) - After the emergence of photographs showing Secretary of State John Kerry on his 76-foot yacht “Isabel” on Nantucket Sound on Thursday, the State Department issued an embarrassing correction Friday morning, back-tracking and acknowledging that the Secretary was in fact on the yacht on Wednesday, the day the Egyptian military staged a coup against democratically-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.

Originally, State Department officials were quick to deny a Wednesday tweet from CBS News’ Mosheh Oinounou that: “A @CBSThisMorning producer just spotted Secretary of State Kerry on yacht in the Nantucket Boat Basin. No response when she shouted ‘Morsi.’”

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a statement Wednesday saying “any report or tweet that he was on a boat is completely inaccurate.”

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

But overnight, photographs emerged showing Kerry on “Isabel” and taking in some kayaking on Thursday.

The New York Daily News just published some of them.

On Friday morning, Psaki issued a second statement, acknowledging that Kerry was “briefly on his boat on Wednesday.”

Kerry again swamped by nautical controversy

She went on to say that “Secretary Kerry worked around the clock all day including participating in the President’s meeting with his national security council, and calls with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eade, Qatari Foreign Minister al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu, Egyptian Constitution Party President ElBaradei and five calls Ambassador Patterson on that day alone and since then he continued to make calls to leaders including Emirati Foreign Minister bin Zayed, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr.”

An administration official added that none of those calls happened while Kerry was on his boat.

State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

If there was nothing wrong with Kerry yachting while Egypt's deadline loomed and as Morsi was being deposed.......why deny it?
There is not a responsible adult in any top Obama Administration position.

Kerry acts like an Eighteen Century European member of the nobility who also has acquired the prestige of the top Diplomatic portfolio in the realm....detached, drawn by comforts and "1%" living while pretending to be "International".

Meanwhile, in Egypt, Obama-backed Morsi gets the Bum's Rush and the US Ambassador is an issue for trying to persuade non-Muslim Brotherhood groups not to protest.

This administration just cannot tell the truth and should not expect the citizens of the United States to trust them... What a bunch of childish liars!

    Dreadful and totally incompetent.

I really dont care where he was when this all went down in Egypt. It was an American Holiday. The most important and meaningful American Holiday in my book. I do care, however, that his aides immeaditily lied and then accused Mosheh Oinounou of reporting inaccurate information. It wasnt until the public was presented with photo evidence that they aknowledged that he was on his boat. To top it off, the minimized it by saying he was "briefly" on his boat. As I recall, he was also spotted at other festivities in the area. Why the need to lie about something so trivial. The administrations creditability just took another hit in my book. And im a dem.

It was a big deal when the Republican Governor left town for South America, while his staff said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. Truth is not only important when a lie has no apparent consequences. The spin machine revs up again, whether they need it for a Real Lie, or just spin because we klike the d d dizzy zy y y feeling it provides.

So what? What was he supposed to do, stand in Tahrir Square, wave his hands, and put a stop to the whole thing?

Wow, Obama drones flock to protect Kerry, an obvious 1% flake.
This is why this loser was not elected president in 2004 against Bush, who I thought anyone could beat.
Why Obama thought he would be a good SOS is a mystery, especially when Hillary was so horrid at it.
I mean, name one major accomplishment for Hillary?
N Korea, Israel-Palestinians, China, Russia, anything?

Oh, the scandal! Nice reporting! The Secretary of State, who is independently wealthy (I know that is a sin in and of itself in many eyes) celebrates the Fourth of July on his YACHT (after returning from the Middle East where he sought an Israeli Palestinian peace accord). We need a new secretary who enriches himself at taxpayer expense!

The funny thing is this isn't even Republicans doing the digging. Its the liberal media outlets going after him as a Kennedy devotee. The Queen of Mean is gone so now they have fresh meat to fry.

Violence overseas seems to be a way of life! Let them all fight til the death–self-elimination–then perhaps the US will save some money and peace will finally come.

Wow. I can't believe some of you just don't care where the Secretary was. That is his job! And not to mention that he promised that government $250 million. He should be out there making sure our tax payer money isnt lost.

It is all about the lies. If the administration didn't think he should be yachting while a Major crisis was brewing overseas, they would not have been so quick and sure of a denial. They lied because they themselves know how bad it looks to have the Secretary of State "relaxing" while Eqypt, a country he has pledged billions of dollars to, was falling.

Bad. Not bad for Democrats, or Republicans, just plain bad as a government official and as a person.

What is the big hairy rats butt deal about Kerry being on his yacht ? This man is the SoS of the USA, not Egypt. Just why does anyone think that this one man could have done anything to stop the momentum of what was happening there ?
You Obama admin haters really need to get a grip.

The issue is the LIE! If all was as it should be, then why lie? Kerry lied because he knew he was in the wrong.

Kerry was supposed to clear this vacation through me. I would have told him to get to Cairo ASAP and save Egypt from itself. And fix up those pyramids while he was at it.

no sorry, not the same Republicans, see the difference is this, when Bush was awol during 9-11 and Katrina THOSE events were on US soil and Americans were directly hit and Bush did nothing. NEWS FLASH! Egypt is not America, yet Republicans are waaaay more concerned over what happens in Egypt than America, makes sense!
