State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

(CNN) - After the emergence of photographs showing Secretary of State John Kerry on his 76-foot yacht “Isabel” on Nantucket Sound on Thursday, the State Department issued an embarrassing correction Friday morning, back-tracking and acknowledging that the Secretary was in fact on the yacht on Wednesday, the day the Egyptian military staged a coup against democratically-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.

Originally, State Department officials were quick to deny a Wednesday tweet from CBS News’ Mosheh Oinounou that: “A @CBSThisMorning producer just spotted Secretary of State Kerry on yacht in the Nantucket Boat Basin. No response when she shouted ‘Morsi.’”

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a statement Wednesday saying “any report or tweet that he was on a boat is completely inaccurate.”

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

But overnight, photographs emerged showing Kerry on “Isabel” and taking in some kayaking on Thursday.

The New York Daily News just published some of them.

On Friday morning, Psaki issued a second statement, acknowledging that Kerry was “briefly on his boat on Wednesday.”

Kerry again swamped by nautical controversy

She went on to say that “Secretary Kerry worked around the clock all day including participating in the President’s meeting with his national security council, and calls with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eade, Qatari Foreign Minister al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu, Egyptian Constitution Party President ElBaradei and five calls Ambassador Patterson on that day alone and since then he continued to make calls to leaders including Emirati Foreign Minister bin Zayed, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr.”

An administration official added that none of those calls happened while Kerry was on his boat.

Aside from Kerry being on his yacht on a working day, who cares if he is on his yacht when the Egyptian problem happened. We don't have to be involved in every single problem in the world.

Look at Kerry's face...he is a monster. His actions prove it.

Kerry has ever right to be on his boat. It was a holiday etc. The problem is being lied to by the government. Seems they lie now out of habit and telling the truth is something beyond their capabilities

The Secretary of State's job can literally be done anywhere in the world. So long as they have the communication capabilities in place, it really doesn't matter WHERE he is. There is no need to place phone calls from his office at Foggy Bottom, so long as the Secretary is making the calls. Just for the record, I don't much like Mr Kerry, and would never vote for him. I really don't like Mr Obama and would never vote for him. But really, if the infrastructure is in place, the job can be done from anywhere in the world (and has been done all around the world by Secretaries of State from both parties during the 40 or soy ears I've been following politics). Lets focus on other things that really matter in the running of this country and lace into the administration about those issues.

Can someone please tell me why this is at all important? It's another country, there is nothing he could have done other than send a disapproving message.

The point is NOT that he was on his boat. It was that they AGAIN felt they needed to lie to us. WHY?

And what's wrong with him being on his yacht. Does everybody expect for him to be at his desk 24/7?? Come on folks.

What? Another lie from the Obama administration? I'm shocked!
Whats funny is that yet another liberal, champion of the poor was on a 76 foot yacht that most couldn't afford the dingy attached to it. Wait, aren't republicans the evil rich?

Typical of this administration...constant lying. Why on earth did they have to lie about the fact that Kerry was on his boat? He has the right to enjoy himself on a national holiday. However, the fact that they lied about makes us wonder as to the reasons for the lying.

So what? Bush was riding his mountain bike in Texas while Americans were in harms way in the needless and expensive invasion of Iraq.

Wow, reading so many ingorant comments here "Who cares if he's on his boat", "It's a holiday in the US", "Are Democrats expected to work 24/7". Wow. He's Secretary of State. That's not a 9 to 5 job. Second, he's supposed to be our voice to the world. Our 'ally', at least from what the adminstration stated in the past, was just ousted in a coup. You don't find that important?

Stop making excuses for the guy because he's on your team. It's an embarrassment that it comes to that. Remember, your team is supposed to be 'smart foreign power'. (I'm a free agent. I don't belong to a team)

Funny how another state department SoS is caught lying about a major issue, and liberals are only concerned about protecting their lame party!!! Really! Kerry is a fraud, traitor, tax cheat, yet the id I ots of Mass. kept him in office. Just like murdering Teddy. Thanks Dems, NOT!

It seems the problem is with the statement that Kerry "worked all day" after landing in Washington at 4am. Given the reality that he is really on call 24/7, it is difficult to determine what working "all day" means. If he was sighted on his yacht at 4:36pm, he had to have put in at least 8-10 hours in Washington – that counts as "all day" for most folks. What more do you want? It's not as if he's ever actually out of contact.

RE: the "admin" lied – these suggestions that the President is personally involved in every statement to the press is ludicrous – who qualifies as "the administration" in your view?

No one ever lied about Bush being at his ranch, where he vacationed for a month after a summer of threats to the homeland just before 9/11. But the lies came quickly and often; we won't get involved in nation building; Iraq has WMD's and war is inevitable; global warming isn't really happening; can't explain my absence from the Texas national guard during the Vietnam War; Mission Accomplished!

Just a bump in the road. Leave the man alone. He is rich. Rich people have yachts. You people are just jealous of his success. Go out and marry a rich woman and you too can live a life of luxury according to your own needs.

Terrible news story published only to generate sensational reactions. The are a myriad of reasons that this is not relevant. Let's review the most obvious of these.
    1. US Secretary of State is actually an unnecessary position.
    2. The USA has no role or clue with regard to Egypt.
    3. Kerry cannot affect the course or outcome of this revolt.
    4. There is nothing that JK can do about this situation that cannot be done from his yaht.
    5. The USA should not be involved in this revolt or any revolt in the Middle East.
    6. Time to reevaluate all of our government positions & eliminate non-essential positions.
    7. Even Herman Munster deserves time off.

The disturbing part of this story is that the initial response from the administration is to lie about Kerry's whereabouts. They only admitted to it once they where caught in a lie with a transmitted picture from CBS. This is a common theme with this administration. They have done this so often that over half of the American public no longer trusts what they said. There lies the problem. Does John Kerry deserve to be with his family and friends on 4th of July during this crisis? Sure. As long as he does not shirk his responsibilities and completely ignore the situation.
