State Department admits Kerry was on yacht day of Egypt coup

(CNN) - After the emergence of photographs showing Secretary of State John Kerry on his 76-foot yacht “Isabel” on Nantucket Sound on Thursday, the State Department issued an embarrassing correction Friday morning, back-tracking and acknowledging that the Secretary was in fact on the yacht on Wednesday, the day the Egyptian military staged a coup against democratically-elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy.

Originally, State Department officials were quick to deny a Wednesday tweet from CBS News’ Mosheh Oinounou that: “A @CBSThisMorning producer just spotted Secretary of State Kerry on yacht in the Nantucket Boat Basin. No response when she shouted ‘Morsi.’”

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki issued a statement Wednesday saying “any report or tweet that he was on a boat is completely inaccurate.”

“Since his plane touched down in Washington at 4 am, Secretary Kerry was working all day and on the phone dealing with the crisis in Egypt,” Psaki said. “He participated in the White House meeting with the President by secure phone and was and is in non-stop contact with foreign leaders, and his senior team in Washington and Cairo.”

But overnight, photographs emerged showing Kerry on “Isabel” and taking in some kayaking on Thursday.

The New York Daily News just published some of them.

On Friday morning, Psaki issued a second statement, acknowledging that Kerry was “briefly on his boat on Wednesday.”

Kerry again swamped by nautical controversy

She went on to say that “Secretary Kerry worked around the clock all day including participating in the President’s meeting with his national security council, and calls with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eade, Qatari Foreign Minister al-Attiyah, Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu, Egyptian Constitution Party President ElBaradei and five calls Ambassador Patterson on that day alone and since then he continued to make calls to leaders including Emirati Foreign Minister bin Zayed, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr.”

An administration official added that none of those calls happened while Kerry was on his boat.

Don't get the fuss. But whatevs. Egypt isn't even our concern so it shouldn't be Kerry's or Obama's.

So what? He was on his yacht. What's the difference, if he's connected (phone, computer etc)? How many people work from home with no problems? This is no different. BTW, I work from home, on my "days off", lots of people with demanding jobs do the same thing. I'm sure the Secretary of State works on his "days off".

In reality Kerry could have been in Nantucket or virtually anywhere there was WIFi coverage – and as long as he had secure connectivity he could do his job. It's a bit silly to say that the man couldn't or wouldn't be doing his job because of where he was. In days of your "great men" and women could quietly do as they wished during the summer and no one said anything. What kills me is that the Republicans are all over this. But when Bush was in office those same people basically gave "W" a pass when he was out at his ranch in Crawford. Let me tell you from experience – Crawford doesn't have excellent cell or wireless service. Even if the communications arm of the US army provided Bush with the best satellite service in the world he was in much WORSE shape then Kerry would have been on a boat in Nantucket. In other words yes I'm saying the coverage was probably better there than what Bush had in Crawford. There I said it – the hawks are being – well hawkish.

Who cares? People are allowed to take vacations. Interesting how quickly we forget that Dubya spent 3 out of 8 years (or 1,020 days) of his presidency in Crawford, TX! And he was the PRESIDENT. Seriously, why is this news? Kerry needs to remember to take his magic crystal ball with him next time so he can be sure to predict any incidents of unrest before they happen. And for those of you who will undoubtedly say 'But Dubya was also doing work while in TX, he was always having meetings and in touch with his staff' – unless you can prove the opposite is true for John Kerry, I'd say find something else to complain about.

Its not that Kerry was on a boat. Its the state department got caught lying. So if they lied about something this small. How far would they go to lie about an ambassador getting mauled?

CNN we celebrated our Independence yesterday. Republicans and Democrats are allowed a break. This is a non story. If we wait on some of the countries in the world including our own to be problem free no will ever get a day off. It just does not make sense to continue to fan the flames against republicans or democrats. Even though we may differ on our beliefs we don't need to trash each other day in and day out.

So, I suspect the timing of the coup wasn't relayed to Kerry ahead of time. Is he supposed to have no time off at all, just in case some crisis occurs? Get over it.

This administration is always holding others to their own high standards while, having no standards of their own to speak of, the administration routinely lies about everything, even the small things, like what the Secretary of State was doing the day before yesterday.

Now that we've found Kerry, some media outlet oughta ask him about the money he promised to give to Morsi and his govt in Egypt. Where is it? Of course, our Dear Leader in the White House will approve of Kerry's actions.
