Austin, Texas (CNN) - The Texas House of Representatives approved a measure Wednesday that would place broad new restrictions on abortions in the state.
A state Senate committee is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to send its version of the bill to the full Senate.
FULL STORY
Texan Republicans only care about the fetus when it is in the womb. Once it is born, they do all they can to limit access to education, health, and welfare.
Dear Hard Core Liberal, Yes it's a 'medical procedure' for the woman, but you are aware that an independent human life is being killed during the procedure right? Why is it up to you whether or not you get to kill someone?
fred: "Why must a baby have to pass through the birth canal in order to be considered a person?"
The pont at which the unborn is considered a "person" is a purely subjective judgment. At one extreme are people who believe it's a "person" at the moment of conception. At the other extreme are people who believe it takes place at birth. Most people believe it's at some point in between. One of the more common positions is that it's when it can survive outside the womb, but even that is not a simple answer.
Most people agree it should be treated as a person if it can survive outside the womb without significant medical intervention, but not all of those agree it should be treated as a person if it has no chance of survival without months of neonatal care. Still other people will say it's when the brain starts to form or when brain activity begins.
There simply is no universal agreement on this and there never will be. Science can tell us when various milestones occur during development, but it cannot tell us which of them make the unborn a person.
"Just wait until they're done making abortion illegal, then they can move on to their next big regressive measure"
No, that next measure will be sending leftists overseas where they belong.
"It also places new guidelines for abortion clinics that require them to have the same certifications as other surgical center. What I want to know is why didn't they have that requirement to start off. "
Because the universal consensus of the medical community is that it is medically unnecessary. It's that simple. This law will fail because it bears no rational relation to the public good it claims to achieve.
@Fred You make up an imaginary friend to explain everything you don't understand and then call atheists ignorant? Freaking Christians are like cavemen thinking that the gods gave them fire when that tree got struck by lightning.

If a woman can not make up her mind within 12 weeks of being pregnant to have an abortion...she does not deserve to be pregant or ever give birth again. 12 weeks is plenty of time to decide what to do.....
------------------
So, why close up clinics? With all of the clinics that would be closed, the backlog is likely to grow longer than 12 weeks.

Otherwise keep your mouths shut and don't try to tell another woman what she can and can't do with her own body. Problem solved.

You have heard of the first amendment, right?
_______________
Saying what you think, regardless of how silly it is may be a right. Forcing others to live by it is not.

True and that is exactly what I did. I said what I thought, which is protected by the 1st amendment. In addition, I never to Rob he did not have the right to tell people to shut up. My point is his advice will be ignored!
Texas is a big rich state and can afford the $500,000 to raise each kid whose mother is unemployed and has no insurance. Simetimes people sit on thier brains. Can you say BANKRUPT ?? The state and taxpayers in the state will end up paying for all those kids to be born and raised now.....other wise, the state will have the worst child morality rate in the USA. On the other hand......there's an additonal 200,000 democrats born each year.
All this baloney about saving lives. Are the pro-lifers (probably most of whom are pro-death penalty) willing to pitch in and pay for the children who are unwanted, or adopt a few? Don't the pro-life women now feel proud of themselves for having fought for the diminishing rights of their sisters who now have no choice in the matter – and who may well choose life for their unborn baby – and moreover will not have the resources available for women's specific needs? Why are the pro-life men so anxious to turn the clock back and take control of their women? OK ladies, I feel the need to start another lobby – we'll call it the Lysistrata Group. That's pro-choice!
‘LIBERALISM is a religion, ABORTION is the sacrament’: 55 million murders in 40 years for the convenience of a majority of women who want the ‘freedom’ to screw their brains out, at taxpayer expense, and suffer no consequences! Most Commendable!

That's neither your nor the government's decision to make.
The republican war on women continues.
Fine restrict abortion but then pass legislation that provides for full benefits to single mothers. Raise taxes to help single income families. Funnel money into more schools and better education. Set up better social services systems to ensure children of low income families are not suffering mal-nutrition or abuse at home. If you are so concerned about the unborn child then perhaps you should ALSO be just as concerned about the rest of there lives not just pre-birth and when they are 18 and can pay taxes and serve in the military for the senseless wars you start and they get killed in. So GO AHEAD Texas but start caring for you children instead of saying your own your own once your are out of that canal!!
Here's a solution to the abortion debate: don't "kill" the baby - just remove it from the womb and let it do whatever it wants! That way, pro-choicers get control of their own body, and anti-choicers don't get to be all butthurt about something being killed!
How is this "FAIR" to the baby?
Gee...the Texas GOP passes a bill that will not solve ANY problems, will make matters worse for women (especially poor women) and ignores the wishes of a large segment of their population?
Shocker.
Just another reason to hate Republicans and the Tea Party Movement. Setting policy based on religion and opinion is very dangerous.
Don't worry, we'll be getting rid of them come 2014.

Whatever. This kind of fanaticism is why we don't listen to you. So do you think taxpayers should be responsible for 55,0000,000 MORE people? Durrrrrr.
Men need to stay out of the uterus, it is none of their business.

Believers are so ignorant. Only a complete fool can actually look at the EXTREME violence, hate and killing and believe there is a magical man in the sky controlling it all.

I imagine you don't believe a Devil either? He would be the cause of this mess. Yet humans allow him to use them. Not God's fault! People make choices Some people choose evil!

Fred I guess you base your beliefs on the 2000 year old book by people who believed in slavery, stoning children for not obeying their parents etc. I also assume that you have no true knowledge of biology. The human body is not a prefect design based on the image of god, we are fraught with errors left over from evolutionary processes. As you put it "only a fool" could look at billions of pieces of evidence that all support the biological explanation of life through evolution. Lets just end with this, if you get sick, don't see a doctor who will give you an antibiotic that is only working today because we understand the processes of evolution and continue to fight a evolutionary arms race with bacteria, just pray and see how that works out for you. And while you are at it take a few seconds and think about all the people your belief system in a "good' god will banish to fire and brimstone. While you waste your time on that I am sure there is another moron in another part of the world who believes just as fully and wrongly that you will be brandished to his also asinine beliefs version of afterlife punishment.
@karl from az
We can certainly debate the morality of all the abortions over the past 40 years, but your comment out having them at tax payer expense and suffer no consequences makes no sense.
If there were 55M more people (and that number would likely be much higher as many of those would also have had children by now) in the US, how much more would taxpayers be paying to support them?
At least make a rational argument.
@Jason
So then why did Ohio ban women seeking life or death medical treatment barred from going to public hospitals? Passed by the GOP. By the way, whens the last time you donated money to orphans or foster homes? Have you ever done anything to help? Or do you just ignore all of the kids without families?
