Holder faces political pressure over possible Zimmerman charges

Washington (CNN) - Attorney General Eric Holder, a longtime target of Republicans who have tried to force him out of office, now faces the prospect of angering liberal supporters when his Department of Justice decides whether to file federal charges in the Trayvon Martin killing.

Civil rights groups are planning nationwide protests, and hundreds of thousands of people support an online petition drive calling for admitted shooter George Zimmerman to face federal charges in the February 2012 killing.

My fellow liberals: can we focus on fights we can win, please?

For starters: let's support local candidates committed to putting into gun-control measures into law. Also, laws in clear language laying out what "neighborhood watch" rent-a-cops can and can't do.

Basically, change America via ballot box. The energy expended in demanding that Holder do something he can't do would be better directed towards local activism. Let's get to work.

Just because GZ was judged innocent does not mean that he didn't do something worng. All it means is that no one can prove that he did something wrong. It's his word against Trayvon's. I do not see how the Justice Department can successfully bring a racial bias charge against Zimmerman, especially in light of his aquittal.

It's not whether he should pursue the federal charges. It's whether or not a conviction can be achieved. The DOJ will be better served by investing it's time in overturning these "Stand Your Ground" laws which is the crux of this outrage.

What a sad tragedy for both families...Zimmerman never would have left his car without a gun. Picked a fight with the wrong guy. Whatever happen to taking an a&&whipping like a man? Now he has to face life like the punk he is and those jurors know he was wrong may they never have peace knowing they let a killer loose to kill again.

Holder is a corrupt man, who will try to convict Zimmerman with absolutely no basis for the conviction. He is a reverse racist who will convict........no matter WHAT!

Well said Data Driven! My sentiments exactly. As the President stated back in 2008: "We are the change we've been waiting for." You can't expect change if you don't get out and vote and affect change.

  7. truth hurts but reality bites

Sure, file these charges against George Zimmerman. I would just love to see him call all the FBI agents that have already investigated and found no racial aspect to this incident. I would also like to see Zimmerman counter sue the government for malicious and wrongful prosecution and end up a very wealthy person.

How many times is this country going to fall victim to the far left and their idiots in the MSM that interject race into everything in order to profit from it in terms of ratings and political agenda? This case has really shined a spotlight on their misconduct in this area along with several other stories in the past. But they continue their insanity.

They got the local white police chief fired by the black city manager and replaced with a black police chief when the white police chief refused to press charges because the facts of the case did not warrant charges. The local DAs refused to prosecute because they knew they had no case after looking at the facts. But no, leftist politicans made this a media event with their marches and turned this into yet another persecution, not prosecution. And they got egg on their face in the form of a complete acquittal, just as the local white police chief and local DAs knew all along.

So yes, please do proceed with more persecution of George Zimmerman so Holder and the feds can end up with egg on their faces as well. They have shown themselves totally incompetent so many other times, I am sure they will do it again with this.

@data driven – yes – pick your battles.

There was no evidence of racial motivation as told by one juror that has spoken out already.

Actually the only racist remark in the trial was a witness quoting TM as calling someone the C word referring to some guy following him. He was actually Hispanic but perhaps they all look the same. (Sarcasm)

This is like "crying wolf" (apologies any wolves reading this). When actual racism appears in reality somewhere else, people will tend to not believe it.

Then you haven't been watching enough MSNBC. Due to morbid curiosity, I risked vomiting my dinner last night and watched their lineup. EVERY one – Matthews, Sharpton, Hayes, Madcow, O'Donnel – spent their ENTIRE show, 5 HOURS in total, with race, race, race, race. MSNBC should really be ashamed of themselves. Really.

yes this is just getting started ... what about the evidence that was withheld ... the pics from TM's phone of the jewelry on the bed, the marijuana & the handgun? Perhaps one of the break in victims from GZ's neighborhood will recognize that jewelry and the truth will out and won't all you GZ haters have egg on your face. TM attacked GZ because GZ caught him casing houses ... all you black folk are so stupid you don't even know when to stand up for true injustice ... you make TM look like an innocent 13 year old minding his own business but he was a typical 17 year old punk ... he could have been white, brown, yellow who cares ... he was doing crimes and he got caught ... yes this is just getting started and get ready for the real outrage when the black attorney who stared all this racist bs, the da dept who withheld evidence, the pundits who exasperated the false accusations and all you idiots that are hyping it to get what you want ... get what you deserve ... you should all pray that no one else gets hurt or killed because of your irresponsible actions.

We need to start allowing ALL evidence into trials. That would take care of alot of problems. On this one, Mr. Holder, you should hold what you got.

@Fair – First, your commenit is not factually correct. There were many topics covered other than the Zimmerman case on MSNBC last night. Tell the truth, truth. You did not watch anyting close to 5 hours of MSNBC coverage, did you??? that is, if you watched any at all. Besides, do you really think that when something with this level of racial undertones happen, that no one is supposed to talk about it? You'd like that, wouldn't you. A man who has reported ONLY African Americans as suspicious in the past, profiles, follows, most likely confronts, and then shots to death an unarmed 17 year old, because as he told the 911 operator "THEY always get away with it." I guess Treyvon didn't get away with going to the 7-11 to buy iced tea and skittles. You Conservatives must be very happy with this verdict. It is a tragedy, caused by Zimmerman not following the instructions of the 911 operator. I don't think they should file a civil rights case, but I do hope the Martins file a sucessful civil lawsuit, because Zimmerman's actions led directly to the death of Treyvon, period.

  14. it must be said

First the far left used the IRS to target their political opponents, now they want to use the Justice Dept. to target an innocent American that protected his own life. The far left racial agenda of the Democrats is to keep interjecting race into everything and use it as a justification to trample the rights of American citizens like Zimmerman. I suppose the only real outcome that would please the leftists was if Martin was allowed to kill Zimmerman that night when he attacked Zimmerman? Now they want to take away a person's right to defend their life. These dangerous far left race mongers can not be allowed to get away with this.

Seriously? What about GZ's violent history of attack police officers and an order of protection from an ex-girlfriend. What about the fact that GZ past history of being prescribed medication for bipolar disorder? Yeah. Let's look at all of the evidence.

Oh really? Then tell me, Mikey – what did you think about O'Donnell's comment that those who take the 5th are, and I quote, "automatically guilty"? That comment alone shows predjudice and should prevent that self-avowed socialist from EVER serving on a jury in the United States. Agree?

    @ Fair

You've been a Fox News invalid so long, you can't possibly comprehend other points of views outside of your white picket fence and your gated community to keep "those people out".

Dutch/Bad Newz had it right yesterday, we should boycott spending any money in the State of Florida. While I'm sure zimmerman (as the coward he is), will be hiding out on some island – we can show Florida that we don't approve of their laws and their willingness make celebrities out of pigs who murder children in cold blood. This would send a message loud and clear. HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS. Boycott Florida.

I have said it vefore an i say it again! Come on people – get your brains right and get on with your life-its a terrible tragedy = sometimes "stuff" just happens!

Fascinating delusion- who approached whom? I think the undisputed fact is that Zimmerman approached Martin, who in fact, wasn't doing anything- except of course being where Zimmerman thought he shouldn't. How would you feel if Martin had "successfully" defended himself from Zimmerman? Whould you still feel that "justice" was done?
