(CNN) - Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, will challenge three-term Republican Sen. Michael Enzi of Wyoming for his seat in next year's mid-term elections, she announced Tuesday in a web video.
"Today I am launching my candidacy for the United States Senate," she said.
Cheney dedicated part of her nearly six-minute long video to criticizing President Barack Obama, accusing him of announcing a war on Americans' freedoms of religion and speech.
Missing, however, was any personal attacks on her GOP opponent, Enzi.
In her announcement she said it was time for a "new generation of leaders to step up." She then made a call to action, saying, "every victorious movement in history has required the full participation of men and women of courage, conviction and principle...join me in this fight."
Cheney, who chairs a nonprofit on national security and education called Keep America Safe, has been rumored this year to be considering a U.S. Senate bid from Wyoming.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee, however, says it stands firmly behind Enzi, the GOP incumbent.
"Our mission is to re-elect our incumbents and build a Republican majority," NRSC Communications Director Brad Dayspring told CNN.
Cheney sparked some speculation of a potential Senate bid in March when she cautioned her party against moving too far to the middle as the GOP began major rebranding efforts following last year's presidential loss.
"It is time for Republicans to get over their loss in 2012. We are all that stands between this president's policies and a damaged and diminished America," she wrote. "It is time to get back in the fight."
"And I do mean fight," she continued in the Wall Street Journal op-ed. "Republicans are being counseled to move the party to the left, but in my experience, those who advocate more liberal policies for the GOP are wrongheaded or Democrats, or both."
Wyoming is a reliably red state, with a Republican governor, Republican senators and a Republican for its at large representative. Enzi easily won re-election in 2008 with 76% of the vote.
Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried the state 69% of the vote in last year's election.

The only person more wretched and horrible than Liz Cheney, is Dick Cheney.
Right wing wacko's make room ! Another one's a coming. Fear, war, hate and wrap it in an American flag !
Now this is a woman who has the integrity, intelligence, and patriotism to one day be the first female president. Not the lying, corrupt, crass, egocentric, "what difference does it make" Hilary Clinton.
Hey, Liz! Why not ask daddy to invite the senator on a hunting trip?
Really!! A Cheney critisizing another politition? Give me a friggen break,,,,they just don't get it!
The Republicans in general just don't get it or have any understanding on which way the country is moving. They would apparently rather isolate themselves in a quaint time and place that no loger exists. Her father is one of the most disgraceful and paranoid human beings on the planet and I think even saying he is a human being is very generous.
Bring it on..
Wow, she's getting off to a hateful start isn't she. Her "us and them" platform sounds like what is wrong in politics today. She's been on this I hate Barack Obama kick since the day he was elected. It is ridiculous. She is not a force for positive action.
Go, Go Liz Go!
How can the Senate get any worse?
Liz Cheney is the answer.
great, do we really want this century's biggest war criminal's spawn any part in government?
As a Republican, I think Liz Cheney would be a terible choice for a senator. I am not from Wyoming and don't believe in telling people from Wyoming how to vote however, she is probably as crooked as her father. Dweight D. Eisenhower said it best when he said beware of the Military Industrial complex. Dick Cheney and his Haliburton buddies profited mightily from his fraud war in Iraq. These people will always say we need a military budget that is DOUBLE the combined military budgets of China, Russia, and India combined. They are nothing more than profiteers while they wave the American flag. They chalenge people by saying if your not for a large military budget you are for the enemy. Guess what Liz Cheney. We do not need a Super Large Military Indutrial Complex envisioned by your father and you to defend this country. The second amendment asures any invading army would face an armed populace in excess of 250 million armed people, considering all the guns in possession by our fellow citizens. This is the largest Army on the face of the earth and costs the taxpayer nothing. We have a nuclear shield that is second to none, however it does not cost us 650 billion a year to keep it. Most of our military budget goes for overpaid defense contractors that have found a way to keep overbilling the taxpayer while our enlisted men and women keep seeing thier benefits get cut. The VA is a joke and often fails our troops miserably. You call yourself Conservative, but in reality you are nothing more than money grubbing politician that needs to have her ideas exposed for what they are. You represent everything that is wrong with this country. The so called elite of this nation, Dems and Repubs alike are ruining what once was a great nation. This country needs to wake up and reject these ruling families who have made government thier own National Bank. It is time once and for all to kick to the curb the Cheneys, the Bushes, the Reagans, the Cuomos, the Kenedys, the Kerrys the Spitzers, all of them. Return government to the people, by the people, for the people.
She sounds just like her warmongering father. She's exactly the sort of person who should be kept well clear of any type of "public service". She will only make more enemies for the US – hardly what we need these days.
One loser chasing another loser! Guess what...we're all the losers when one of them has to win...go home Dick junior...we have had enough of the Bush's and Cheney's.
Ha ha ha ! Wyoming needs a Cheney freak like it needs a hole in the head.
There you go again. Corruption is hereditary in political cases.
Go for it!
Split the vote in Wyoming and understand that they won't vote for someone who has no real connection to their state.
She lives in the DC metro area, same as she has for the past 14 years at least.
Sounds to me like Liz is the same old as the guy who has the seat now .. The rebranding the GOP speak of is not a shift to the left but a move toward the middle . Where most of America stands anyway . Attacking Obama is the standard for the GOP . They cannot attack one another because there the same vanilla and I mean vanilla ice cream . But attacking Obama is just a waste of time In Wyoming no one likes him there anyway . She's not running for The White House so Im not sure how Liz is drawing any distance from the incumbent . To be honest she cant go any farther right she might end up in the Nazi Party and she cant go middle of the road because she see's that as to liberal . So Liz has got be different ... How ?? Hummm..hard to say really .. She is just a female version of her Daddy and unless Im mistaken he's wanted on War Crimes in a few countries around the Globe..Liz has got a long long dirt country road ahead of her . Good Luck with that .. Lizzz
I would love to see Liz in the senate!! As a viscous and relentless attack dog. she will rankle the hell out of Dems.
Liz Chaney says it's time for a "new generation of leaders to step up." OK – let's get some new leadership. We don't need someone else to stand in front of Dick Chaney while he puppeteers the politician. His policies and influence go all the way back to the Nixon Administration. We do need change – but another Chaney isn't change. It's just another neo-con looking for a platform.
I'm sure she'll fit right in with the rest of the inbred teabaggers in Wyoming.
Go Liz!! We need you in 6he Senate. Good luck!
I think this is an indication that Liz Cheney has her eyes set on the presidency in the future. The problem for her is that Enzi is in the way and she needs to start her political career now.
No more Cheneys please. I've had my fill.
Oh she just wants to go to the Senate stay for 6 and retire at that salary for life.
