Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

What happened to the the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. All of which are too easily taken away with a quick pull of a trigger. Remember you can't take back that bullet once it leaves the barrel. Cruz has no real respect for the gun and its sad that he's a fellow Texan.

Disarmed people are dominated people by their own government. Every nation that confiscates weapons provides zero freedom; Russia, China, Cuba....The right to defend oneself from tyrants of one kind or another is what give us all freedom.

Lets try and get this right for a change. The 2nd amendment was written hundreds of years ago in a totally different time. The right to bear arms is actually an old British term meaning you have the right to be armed and for the purpose of belonging to a militia to protect yourself against foreign agression. I'am sure the forefathers had no intention for it to mean every nutbar should own a gun. Stand your ground was not a defence but anyone who followed the trial knows it was included in jury instructions. If Martin was armed would he have the right to shoot Zimmerman who was following him both in his truck and on foot on a dark night in self defence? If I was 17 and some u/k person was following me like that I would have punched him in the nose too.

Why is Obama calling for a review of Stand Your Ground when Zimmerman did not use it as a defense?

I am amused by people like him that say they support the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment. They are the same people that jump up and down when the search and seizure cases are being decided. They are also the same people who get angry at the freedom of speech cases when they do not agree with the content. Its all a matter of perspective!

After Rick Scott is voted out and Charlie is voted in we the people of Fl will throw out SYG. I think a lot of the people in Tallahassee now will be looking for a job like Rick will be.

Truth hurts, and it hurts even more when a Hispanic Senator from Texas utters it. Some American's simply aren't capable of living in a free state, and need a strong govt to take care of them and all their needs... anyone disagreeing with a Statist's views is to be denigrated mercilessly.

The Senator is a joke. How can you comment if you haven't seen or read the full remarks. He is indeed a male Sarah Palin. No wonder we have the worst Congress in history. What a shame for the people of Texas and the United States.

Didn’t read the actual article but read something someone posted about this Cruz guy whoever he is, and I gather he said something negative about Obama who I refuse to watch just like this Cruz guy, but if this is about guns I'm all for them and against whatever Obama (the worst president ever – but I won't provide my rationale or evidence on that) might have said which I'm certain had something to do with taking all our guns away. Sure glad I stocked up on guns, gold and Top Ramen this year!!

The Zimmerman case has always been about gun control. The only problem was the anti-gun folks picked the case that was lawful. Where do you think the term "white hispanic" was born. I never heard that word until this case.

If someone with a gun – even if legally carried – appears to be threatening to me, I'll use my legally carried gun to shoot him before he shoots me. Then I'll wait for the NRA gun nuts to sort THAT one out!

Obama needs to stay out of our state's private rights. He has done enough to harm the country but he needs to just stay home in DC and shut up when it comes to what individual states want to do internally. That includes marriage laws, employment laws, immigration laws, gun laws! Just lock yourself in the White House and quit breaking things or race baiting.

    Joe Larch
Obama should be impeached immediately for trying to put race into this . Before the trial everybody was saying race is not the issue self defense is . But then after the decision the all of a sudden throw race into it again. Obama is a racist and should have never been elected in the first place. IMPEACH OBAMA NOW
I just picked this one as an example that dumbness in the righties comments here knows no boundaries. If you really listened to President Obama's with an open mind, racism can only be concluded if you look at life through that filter yourself. GOP dumbness can only be fought with votes in elections.

Cruz is a bigot, racist, hate-monger, all at the same time.
If this country isn't careful, he'll become the second coming of Senator Joe McCarthy!
When that happens, watch what will happen to the Bill of Rights!
This guy is not only dangerous, he's a catastrophe waiting to happen.
