Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

The Zimmerman- Martin case has zero, nada, nothing, to do with the Stand your ground law. It was a clear cut case of self defense, that is unless Zimmerman was standing his ground while on his back getting the hell beat out of him, which certainly can be life threatening. If Zimmerman had simply walked up and shot Martin for no reason I would be first to volunteer for the firing squad.

Ted Cruz is running away so fast and hard from being Latino and trying to be Caucasian that he will take the most extreme positions possible against the President and any policy initiative that is progressive !
    Self-hater !

Another opportunistic minority "conservative" out to prove how much more "conservative" they are by demonstrating the irrelevance of how anti-obama they are rather than by addressing the issues themselves.

Cruz isn't bright enough to understand the meaning of the President's comments.

A thoughtful examination of the issues is in order here, but since so few comments reflect actual thought, I'll say only that Ted Cruz is a complete moron, unworthy of the sobriquet attached to his position, or any other, even "hey, you."

Protect the gun rights and protect the profits, once again money out weighs human life. Its all about money, people are getting rich off selling GUNS...just like the drug dealers get rich from selling drugs.

Funny how it all seems to not go away no matter what we try to do, and the people trying to do the right thing always meet with equal or greater resistance to prevent the right thing from being done

Keep up the good work, Sen. Cruz. You've got the left running scared. Anyone they are afraid of, they immediately start calling them names.

I agree with Cruz, Obama will use any and everything he can to promote his anti-gun agenda. If Martin was killed with anything else but a gun Obama wouldn't have cared period! He doesn't care about the people, he cares about his agenda only!

Americans have always been considered cowboys. Even in the west there was a code never shot an unarmed man. What do you expect from a country that makes John Wayne a hero, when other actors were serving their country, he was told to stay in Hollywood and further his career. Now Americans are trying to justify shooting an unarmed man walking down the street.

Has anyone else noticed how much Sen. Cruz resembles the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, in looks and ideology? I predict Cruz will self-destruct, his reputation in shambles and his policies discredited, in much the same way as McCarthy, except Cruz's demise will be far less protracted.

    Let's see...

Cruz hasn't heard the remarks made by the President (which did not speak to gun ownership, but rather the legality of situations where their use is justified), but immediately went to the "NRA talking points" screed.

Now there's a man who thoughtfully considers his words before foaming at the mouth for the benefit of a few...

This "God given right to shoot each other" crap is a stupid phase that stupid humans are going through at the moment. It too will pass. We've come a long way from lynching people in trees but we still have a long way to go.

Anyone against private gun ownership for self protection, evidently has never lived in New Orleans, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, or many other large cities......
It isn't about's about who you actually need to protect yourself from......
