Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

Totally 100% political remarks by this President ,of course that is all Politicians know and none of it is the truth or reality. They are so involved in the spin they think everybody still believes them .The truth is Stand your ground has saved more lives than it has taken,it is a right that more African Americans have used to protect their homes lives and families than whites have and the statistics do not lie, politiicans like the President lie to attempt to assuade stupid people.

The President is NOT trying to take anyone's guns and the tea party people should stop trying to scare the public. This dude is really scary (Rand Paul, also) because they say things to ignite their base into a frenzy. How did Cruz ever get elected?

Obama does not want to take your gun, he wants to change the nasty laws that allow you to kill others outside your house for no reason. Bozo.

The fact that the President would chime in on this versus so many other issues going on is crazy. The proof against Zimmerman was so weak at best and proof so great on other issues such as IRS, Bengazi, do I need to say more?

Being able to protect yourself with a gun is one thing. Being able to cause an incident to escalate resulting in the use of a gun for self protection is yet another.

Ted Cruz is a self entered, egotistical buffoon who is more interested in shock comments and headlines versus serious debate and thoughtful discussion. No coincidence that since he and his tea party crowd have taken over the house that all order and compromise cease to exist. So sad.

These comments by the President of the USA seem to be intended on racial divide. Does all this have something to do with the reason the Feds are stockpiling ammunition? The citizens will not have the ammo to sustain any type of rebellion. This could be bad in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Obama does indeed have a disregard for the bill of rights... He also doesn't believe in keeping any promises.

The presidents remark has zero to do with the right to bear arms, but the idea that maybe people should put more thought into their actions before tragic events lead from them.

How is the president calling for people to think about and consider reviewing the stand your ground laws to see if that's really what they as citizens want, in any way trampling on anybody's right to have a gun. Give me a break. Cruz just gets cranky when President Obama says anything.

I really can not believe he has sided with the race baiters.

What school did this Senator go to? How is eliminating stand your ground laws an assault on the Second Amendment? Oh, saying Second Amendment brings in bigger donations from the gun nuts. Oh, McDonalds is hiring I an assault on the Second Amendment. Oh, a Senator pulled the Second Amendment CARD – someone laugh in his face. IOWA – what the hell comes out of Iowa

I wish that Cruz would just sit back, serve out the rest of his term quietly, then disappear back where he came from. Canada, wasn't it?

I believe Ted Cruz was born in Canada, and his father lied to get in the country. Yes, he is an "american" we should listen to.

"examined" = "assault " That is the way the GOP thinks. Texas finally gets rid of Perry and now we have Cruz. Texas is doomed.

This case wasn't about stand your ground or about race. Thanks to you, the media, your best bro sharpton and of course the black people who are never guilty of any crime, it is about race. What are you going to do to help the white kids? Nothing?

and it's interesting to note that Senator Cruz felt the need to assume President Obama was coming after 'our' guns when even he admitted he'd not heard the President's remarks.
