Cruz says Obama going after guns with ‘stand your ground’ remark

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s suggestion that state “Stand your Ground” laws should be examined after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin could amount to an assault on the right of Americans to own guns, Sen. Ted Cruz said in Iowa Friday.

Speaking after addressing a Republican group, Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks. But when asked to respond to Obama’s call for a review of laws in individual states, Cruz responded by saying the president was trampling on constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“It is not surprising that the president uses, it seems, every opportunity that he can to go after our Second Amendment right to bear arms,” the Texas Republican said. “This president and this administration has a consistent disregard for the Bill of Rights.”

For example, Cruz said the Obama administration was violating free speech guarantees by “restricting the rights of our servicemen and women to share their faith and not be gagged,” and that the use of drones raised other constitutional questions.

Obama on Friday made his first public comments about the acquittal of George Zimmerman last week in Martin’s shooting death in 2012.

In his speech, Obama called for reconsideration of “Stand your Ground” self-defense laws in Florida and other states.

“I think it would be useful for us to examine some state and local laws to see if they are designed in such a way that they may encourage the kinds of altercations and confrontations and tragedies that we saw in the Florida case, rather than diffuse potential altercations,” Obama said.

Stand Your Ground laws address the application of firearms, not ownership. This is 2013, not Arizona in 1881.

We all know that George Zimmerman had a right to stand his ground. How come Trayvon Martin didn't?

Obama has proven to the white race that he is a racist. Thank God I was smart enough not to vote for him!

Until 6 years ago I was a registered republican, then I became an independent. Why, because of the over reaction from republicans just like this and to make it worse, he reacted to it without listening to Obama's comments..This has nothing to do with gun-control, just like closing the loophole about buying guns at a gun show without a background check has nothing to do with it either. A representative government? How can that be when 90% of the public wanted something done about the loophole and the results were? A non-profit like the NRA again influencing politicians, which is against the law – talk about power over the people..This nation is changing and unless the "white-centric ideology" of hard-line republicans change, they will gradually become less and less relevant. I agree with what the President said about how blacks are perceived and treated in America. Yes, there has been a lot of progress in race relations in the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. As a white living in the South, but born in the North and retired from the military, the difference how blacks are regarded in the South as compared to how they are treated in the obvious. I feel for African Americans especially in the South.

Sounds like Obama is going after Cruz who managed to get elected to the U.S Senate but would never have made it to the Senate of Canada. Canadian Governors General have too much common sense to appoint a crackpot who would serve to age 75.

In spite of the NRA lies, the POTUS has been in office since Jan 08 and has not taken anyone's guns yet.

"...Cruz told reporters he hadn’t yet watched Obama’s remarks."

How in the world do you give a full discourse condenming what the president has said and you haven't even heard the remarks?!

    That's ignorance personified.

Jeez....this guy is Michelle Bachman and Sarah Palin with male genitalia. This guy has learned the extreme right way of garnering attention....twist something a Dem says and make it sound real scary to someone on the mid to far right.

What this bozo doesn't realize is that "stand your ground" also applied to Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was TOLD to STAY IN HIS he gets out instead. Trayvon probably felt threatened, or at least "profiled" by the guy, and he had as much right to "stand his ground" against Zimmerman.

Most of the state's "stand your ground" laws were written and passed by predominantly white Republican legislators.

Where do these people get this stuff? He's coming after your guns? Seriously? Is there anybody out there who can cite one instance of Obama coming after their guns? One? Guns are easier to get today than they ever have been. There are more guns out there than there ever have been. More people are being killed by guns than ever before. But look out, the black boogey man is coming for your guns! Mr. Cruz, get a life.

Another gun toitng Senator earning his NRA lobbying dollars at the expense of public safety. So many gun killings and no sane gun policy. Even background checks were too much a stretch for the gun fanatics. Keep electing people like Cruz and continue to watch the fanatics and extremists setting the agenda fo all of us. We elect them we share the blame.

As a Texan I'm horrified that my State has this ridiculous, sleazy, slimey POS as one of it's Senators. He is exactly the sort of fool that's made Texas the laughing-stock of the Nation. The "stand your ground" laws are now making it legally acceptable to troll around your neighborhood and provoke unarmed individuals into a fight, and then gun them down if you can prove you were afraid. How can this pass the common sense test? Is this a law we can allow gang members to use to defend their activities? Why not?

Hmmm, this as nothing to do with guns Cruz, its the principle he's talking about. Everyone has there right to defend themselves, Apparently a bag of skittles and a coat with a hoody and being black is more dangerous then someone with a gun, regardless of who has a gun and there race. Freaking politicians, are more ignorant to middle class issues then ever!

Cruz is working the radical right-wing with his distortions, lies and baseless conspiracies about the President. He is attempting to gain support from the ultra-right wing – something he can use in Texas but will prove toxic at the national-level. Fortunately, America is moderated by progressive people who expect pragmatic, compassionate, and fair behavior from their leaders. He can win a GOP primary but will be flushed down the toilet in the general elections at the national-level. Clown Car...
