Issa demands more Benghazi documents from State

(CNN) - The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is again issuing subpoenas for State Department documents involving the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi last year.

But an adviser at the State Department said the latest demand is a head-scratcher.

Chairman Darrell Issa, R-California, announced Thursday that his committee needs more documents produced during the Accountability Review Board's investigation of the terror attack that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

“After ignoring requests for months, the State Department has left no alternative but to issue subpoenas for documents relevant to our investigation,” Issa said in a statement. “State Department tactics to delay and impede accountability have exhausted the Committee’s patience. Further subpoenas may also be necessary if the Department is not forthcoming on other requests.”

The review board’s report, issued late last year, found "systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies" at the State Department in the lead-up to the attack. As a result, four State Department officials were disciplined immediately after the report's release. One resigned, while three others were placed on administrative leave and relieved of their duties.

Critics of the board’s independent review, however, say its report lacked key information and did not go deep enough into the investigation.

With renewed attention on Benghazi and the fact that none of the suspects have been captured or killed nearly a year later, Republicans are again increasing pressure on the Obama administration to provide answers about its response to the attack.

Issa and his committee want all the documents provided by the State Department, as well as all documents and communications the review board produced during its investigation.

The committee had already subpoenaed the State Department for 25,000 pages of documents. The department complied and has been bringing in the documents each day for the committee's review since January. Issa placed those same documents under the new subpoena, as well.

Alex Gerlach, communications adviser to Secretary of State John Kerry, released a statement Thursday night, saying the department "has worked in good faith to meet Chairman Issa's many demands."

"For seven months, we've offered and provided access to specific documents at his request. I'm scratching my head trying to ascertain what practical value yet another Issa subpoena has in protecting our diplomats," Gerlach said.

In March, the oversight committee subpoenaed the State Department for documents related to the controversial talking points used by then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on news shows days after the attack. She said at the time the violence originated from a spontaneous demonstration, but the administration later labeled it a terrorist attack.

Is this not the same Issa that ended up with lies & covered face under IRS probes. If he can do a better job than top level security gurus who have investigated this matter already, he should then be drafted to join the FBI or CIA. I dont think he has much job to justify his enormous remunerations at the Congress.

What else could be possibly said or found about this? Are they going to accept that the ambassador made a major mistake because he went to an unsecured area.

Ok Clinton haters and Fox "news" sheep. Name the number of attacks in the last ten years on US embassy's and Consulates________. Name how many were killed________. Name how many Republicans called for an investigation into these attacks_______. Explain why this attack is different than any of the others________. Explain the procedures in place to confront a surprise attack on an embassy or consulate________. Can't do it can you, but I bet you still know what happened and who to blame. Because Fox "news" filled in those blanks for you with their own uneducated opinion. I'm surprised you don't feel stupid!

Why would I want to know what really happened? This guy Issa is a real jerk and I don't like him! I will ignore all of the obvious signs that there was a cover up! It's my guy who is president now so I must defend him! I'm a democrat! (actually could be said about a republican, too)

Guess they should talk to the CIA members that were there. If they can protect them from who ever doesn't want them to talk. First hand accounts would be better anyway.

If only these republicans cared as much about Iraq and all the death and destruction that was terrible. If they cared about the trillions that were spent on contractors and Halliburton and how little on the troops and what they went through. These republicans really are some sick puppy and we are not paying any attention to what they are doing now. It is a waste of time for these losers. They will be gone all of August so not much of anything will get done. The work they really need to be doing will sure not get done.

Issa's been in Congress since 2001 ... I don't recall him calling for hearings about these incidents under Bush's watch:

    2002 U.S. Embassy Karachi, Pakistan: 10 killed, 51 injured
2004 U. S. Embassy bombed in Uzbekistan: 2 killed, several injured.
    2004 U.S. Consulate Saudi Arabia: 8 killed
2006 US. Embassy Syria: 1 killed, several injured
2007 U.S. Embassy -Athens: building bombed with an anti-tank grenade...fortunately no one was in the building at the time.
2008-U.S. Embassy – Serbia: 1 dead; Embassy set on fire
    2008- U. S. Embassy- Yemen- bombed 10 killed

I am still amazed that a car thief/illegal gun owner is the head of any government agency, never mind an oversight committee. Even the Army didn't want him but he gets elected to "govern"?
    Is this guy for real?
Enough of Benghazi and the IRS lies that they were only targeting tea troll (koch brothers) non profits.
The person doing the investigations into these "non profits" is a self declared conservative rethug. They did the same investigations for liberal non profits also.
Is he part of the repeal Obamacare for the 40th time also???????

Of course the CIA was involved along with the Obama administration. Does anyone really think that American Citizens would be ok with backing Muslim rebels to topple Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, ect....How else did anyone think the Obama administration was going to get military weapons to the rebels without using covert operations with the CIA to further Obama's Muslim agenda in the Middle East. Obama is no fan of Israel and has the CIA working to eradicate them.
